Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have developed an AI diagnostic tool that can identify autism risk in toddlers under 24 months old with nearly 80% accuracy. This non-invasive method, detailed in JAMA Network Open, uses machine learning to predict Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) risk, potentially enabling earlier intervention.

With autism affecting 1 in 36 children in the U.S., early detection is crucial. While specialists can diagnose autism by age two, the average age of diagnosis is between 4.7 and 5.2 years. Early intervention, especially at ages 2-3, can significantly improve developmental outcomes.

The researchers used data from SPARK and SSC, the largest autism research databases, to train their AI model. They tested four machine learning algorithms, with eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) performing best. Dubbed AutMedAI, the model uses 28 parameters from basic medical and background information to screen children at a very early age.

This AI tool could revolutionize autism screening, making it more accessible and efficient. By enabling earlier detection and intervention, it has the potential to improve long-term outcomes for children with ASD, addressing a critical need in neurodevelopmental care.

UK Introduces AI Cameras to Catch Mobile Phone Use and Seatbelt Violations While Driving

Key Points:

1. New Technology: Artificial Intelligence cameras are being deployed across the UK to catch drivers using mobile phones or not wearing seatbelts.

2. Penalties: Offenders face fines up to £1,000 or six points on their license.

3. Deployment Areas: The cameras are being rolled out in regions including Greater Manchester, Sussex, and Durham, with nine other police forces participating.

   • In Devon, 117 mobile phone violations and 130 seatbelt violations were caught in 72 hours.

   • Hampshire and Thames Valley Police caught nearly 500 offences in one week.

8. Rationale: Department for Transport data shows 400,000 drivers annually use mobile devices while driving, significantly increasing accident risk.

If no offence is detected, Acusensus (the technology company) states that images are immediately deleted.
