Indian AI startup launches local-language chat app challenging global competitors
India's Sarvam launches Indus AI chat app as competition heats up
Indian AI startup Sarvam has officially entered the competitive generative AI market with the launch of its Indus chat application, now available on web and mobile platforms. The Bengaluru-based company is positioning itself as a homegrown alternative to international AI giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in India's rapidly expanding artificial intelligence landscape.
The timing of this launch is strategic, as India has emerged as a crucial market for AI adoption. OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman recently revealed that ChatGPT boasts over 100 million weekly active users in India, while Anthropic reports that India represents 5.8% of Claude's total usage, ranking second only to the United States.
At the core of the Indus app is Sarvam's newly unveiled 105B model, a massive 105-billion-parameter large language model designed specifically for local languages and Indian users. The app was introduced just two days after Sarvam presented both its 105B and 30B models at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where the company also announced significant partnerships and expansion plans.
Currently in beta testing across iOS, Android, and web platforms, the Indus app offers users the flexibility to interact through both text and voice inputs, receiving responses in multiple formats including text and audio. The sign-up process supports various authentication methods, including phone numbers, Google, Microsoft, and Apple ID accounts, though access appears to be geographically restricted to India at present.
The application does come with certain limitations that reflect its beta status. Users cannot delete individual chat histories without removing their entire account, and there's no option to disable the app's reasoning feature, which can occasionally cause slower response times. Additionally, Sarvam has cautioned users about potential access restrictions as the company scales its computing infrastructure.
"We're gradually rolling out Indus on a limited compute capacity, so you may hit a waitlist at first. We will expand access over time," explained Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar on social media platform X, emphasizing the company's commitment to gathering user feedback during this initial phase.
Founded in 2023, Sarvam has successfully secured $41 million in funding from prominent investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Peak XV Partners, and Khosla Ventures. This financial backing supports the company's mission to develop large language models specifically tailored for the Indian market and its diverse linguistic landscape.
Beyond the chat app, Sarvam has been actively building strategic partnerships to expand AI accessibility across different sectors. Notable collaborations include working with HMD to integrate AI capabilities into Nokia feature phones, making advanced technology available to users with basic devices, and partnering with Bosch to develop AI-powered automotive applications.
Sarvam represents part of a growing movement of Indian startups working to establish domestic alternatives to international AI platforms. This trend reflects India's broader strategic goal of maintaining greater control over its AI infrastructure and ensuring that technological solutions are developed with local needs, languages, and cultural contexts in mind.
The launch of Indus comes at a time when competition in the Indian AI market is intensifying, with global players investing heavily in the region while local companies race to develop culturally relevant solutions. As India continues to digitize rapidly and AI adoption accelerates across various sectors, the success of platforms like Indus will likely depend on their ability to offer unique value propositions that resonate with Indian users' specific requirements and preferences.
🔍 Which AI Dilemma Should We Tackle First?
- ⚠️ 1. Speed vs. Understanding The rapid pace of AI development is outpacing our ability to comprehend or regulate it.
- 🧠 2. Lack of Alignment AI systems don’t necessarily optimize for what’s good for humans—even when they seem to.
- 🏢 3. Power Concentration AI is consolidating power into the hands of a few tech giants and governments.
- 🤖 4. Automation Without Purpose AI is replacing jobs faster than society is creating meaningful alternatives.
- 🛑 5. Loss of Human Agency We risk becoming passive consumers of AI decisions, losing creativity and independent thinking.

India hosts major AI summit attracting global tech leaders.
India is making a bold push to position itself as a global AI hub through its four-day AI Impact Summit this week, designed to attract significant artificial intelligence investment to the country. The high-profile event has drawn executives from the world's most influential AI laboratories and technology giants.
The summit features an impressive roster of attendees, including representatives from OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, Microsoft, Google, and Cloudflare, alongside various heads of state. With expectations of 250,000 visitors, the event underscores India's ambitions to become a major player in the global AI landscape.
Among the notable speakers are some of the most recognizable names in technology and AI. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Indian business magnate Mukesh Ambani (Chairman of Reliance), and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis are all scheduled to participate in the summit's proceedings.
The event will also feature significant political representation, with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to deliver a joint speech alongside French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday, highlighting the international diplomatic importance placed on AI development and cooperation.
During one of the discussions, OpenAI's Sam Altman offered an interesting perspective on AI training energy consumption, drawing comparisons to human development. "But it also takes a lot of energy to train a human," Altman remarked. "It takes like 20 years of life and all of the food you eat during that time before you get smart."
This summit represents India's strategic effort to establish itself as a competitive destination for AI investment and development, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to shape the future of artificial intelligence on a global scale.
