Google to launch gen AI experiment ’Whisk’ today: ’Now prompt with images’

Google Whisk AI Image Tool

Whisk: A Visual AI Tool for Artists

Google has unveiled Whisk, an innovative generative AI experiment that revolutionizes how users create and modify images. This new tool, designed for creative professionals and artists, marks a significant shift from traditional text-based prompts to a more intuitive visual input system.

Technical Innovation and User Experience

Whisk's approach allows users to create images by directly manipulating visual elements rather than crafting detailed text descriptions. Users can input three distinct image types: one for the subject, another for the scene, and a third for the style. This combination enables creators to remix elements into unique creations, from digital plushies to enamel pins and stickers.

Behind the scenes, Whisk leverages Google's advanced AI technology. The Gemini model generates captions for input images, which are then processed through Google’s latest image generation model, Imagen 3. This two-step process captures the essence of subjects while allowing for creative interpretation.

Features and Limitations

The tool is designed for rapid visual exploration rather than precise editing. During testing, artists recognized Whisk as a creative tool for quick experimentation. Users can download their preferred results and explore multiple variations efficiently.

Google acknowledges that Whisk may produce unexpected results, as it extracts key features from input images. Variables like height, weight, or hairstyle might differ in the output. To address this, users can modify the underlying prompts at any time.

Why It Matters

This launch highlights Google’s commitment to developing intuitive AI tools for creative professionals. By streamlining the input process and making AI tools more accessible, Whisk opens new possibilities for artists, designers, and content creators looking to blend creativity with AI-driven innovation.

Meta updates its smart glasses with real-time AI video

Meta Smart Glasses

Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses with real-time AI video

Meta has updated its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses with new AI features in firmware v11, including "live AI" that enables continuous conversation with Meta AI without requiring the "Hey, Meta" wake word.

The update adds real-time video analysis capabilities, allowing wearers to ask questions about what they're seeing, and introduces live translation between English and Spanish, French, or Italian. The glasses now include Shazam integration for song identification.

Meta acknowledges that some new features may not be perfect and says it is continuing to improve the experience. The glasses have seen strong sales in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Google DeepMind's Veo 2 brings advanced video generation capabilities

Google DeepMind has announced Veo 2, an advanced video generation AI model capable of creating two-minute-plus clips in 4K resolution, surpassing OpenAI's Sora's capabilities. Currently available through VideoFX with limited resolution and duration, Veo 2 offers improved physics understanding, camera controls, and clearer footage.

While samples show impressive handling of effects like refraction and animation, the model still struggles with consistency in details and realistic human features. DeepMind also updated Imagen 3, its image generation model, with better composition and style options.

Both models use SynthID watermarking technology, though concerns remain about training data sources and creator rights.

YouTube Gives Creators Control Over AI Training of Their Content

YouTube AI Training Control

Creators can manage who trains AI models on their content

The details:

In a significant move to address creators' concerns about AI companies using their content without permission, YouTube has introduced new controls that let creators choose which companies can use their videos to train AI models. The platform announced Monday that creators can now explicitly authorize specific AI companies to access their content through a new setting in YouTube Studio.

The initial rollout includes a list of 18 major tech companies, including industry leaders like OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta, and Apple. Creators can select individual companies or opt to allow "All third-party companies" to use their content for AI training. This move comes after widespread complaints from creators about unauthorized use of their content by various AI companies developing technologies like OpenAI's Sora.

However, there's a notable caveat: Google will continue to train its own AI models on YouTube content under existing agreements with creators. The new controls specifically target third-party access and don't modify YouTube's Terms of Service, which already prohibits unauthorized content scraping.

Future updates may include mechanisms for creators to receive compensation for allowing AI training on their content, along with systems for authorized companies to directly download creators' videos.

Why it matters: The default setting prevents unauthorized third-party training, addressing creator frustrations while potentially setting a standard for AI content usage. The announcement coincides with Google's DeepMind unveiling Veo 2, its video-generating AI model, highlighting the growing importance of video content in AI development.
