Google unveils a next-gen family of AI reasoning models

Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro launches as the company’s most capable reasoning model yet
Google has unveiled Gemini 2.5, a new family of AI models specifically designed with reasoning capabilities that allow them to "think" before responding to queries. This major release marks Google's most substantial entry into the increasingly competitive field of AI reasoning models, as tech giants race to develop systems that can process information more deliberately and accurately.
The flagship of this new lineup, Gemini 2.5 Pro Experimental, has been immediately made available through Google AI Studio and to subscribers of the company's $20 monthly Gemini Advanced plan. According to Google, this multimodal reasoning AI represents its most intelligent model to date, with particular strengths in creating visual web applications and supporting agentic coding tasks—capabilities that could significantly strengthen Google's position in the evolving AI landscape.
This launch represents a strategic pivot for Google, with the company announcing that all its future AI models will incorporate reasoning capabilities as a standard feature. This decision signals a fundamental shift in how AI systems are being designed and marketed, moving from models optimized primarily for speed to those that prioritize accuracy and reliability through more deliberate processing.
The reasoning approach employed by these models fundamentally changes how they operate. Unlike traditional large language models that generate responses immediately based on pattern recognition and statistical prediction, reasoning models allocate additional time and computational resources to consider problems step-by-step before providing answers. This methodology resembles human deliberative thinking, allowing the AI to fact-check its own knowledge, identify potential errors, and resolve contradictions.
In benchmark testing, Google claims Gemini 2.5 Pro demonstrates competitive or superior performance compared to leading models from rival companies. On the Aider Polyglot code editing evaluation, Gemini 2.5 Pro reportedly achieved a score of 68.6%, outperforming models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Chinese AI lab DeepSeek. For the SWE-bench Verified test of software development capabilities, Google's new model scored 63.8%, surpassing OpenAI's o3-mini and DeepSeek's R1, though falling short of Anthropic's Claude 3.7 Sonnet, which scored 70.3%.
On Humanity's Last Exam—a challenging multimodal assessment covering mathematics, humanities, and natural sciences—Gemini 2.5 Pro achieved an 18.8% score, which Google claims exceeds most competing flagship models. While these percentages might seem low in absolute terms, they reflect the extraordinary difficulty of these benchmarks, which are designed to challenge even highly capable AI systems.
One of the most impressive technical achievements of Gemini 2.5 Pro is its expansive context window, initially set at 1 million tokens (approximately 750,000 words)—enough to process the entire "Lord of the Rings" book series in a single operation. Google has announced plans to double this capacity to 2 million tokens in the near future, potentially enabling applications that require processing and reasoning across massive documents or multiple sources simultaneously.
The development of reasoning models across the industry began in earnest when OpenAI launched o1 in September 2024. Since then, Anthropic, DeepSeek, Google, and xAI have all introduced their own versions, creating a highly competitive segment within the broader AI market. These models are particularly well-suited for complex tasks in mathematics, coding, and scientific reasoning, where step-by-step analysis yields significant accuracy improvements over traditional approaches.
Industry experts view reasoning models as crucial components for the next evolutionary step in AI: autonomous agents capable of performing complex tasks with minimal human supervision. By incorporating deliberative thinking capabilities, these models can potentially make more reliable decisions across varied contexts, detect their own limitations, and avoid common pitfalls that plague faster but less careful systems.
However, this enhanced capability comes with higher operational costs. The additional computational resources required for reasoning models generally translate to higher API pricing and longer response times. Google has not yet disclosed pricing for Gemini 2.5 Pro, but industry observers expect it to command premium rates similar to competitors in this category, such as OpenAI's o1-pro, which is priced at $150 per million input tokens and $600 per million output tokens.
For enterprise customers and developers, Gemini 2.5 Pro's immediate availability through Google AI Studio means they can begin experimenting with these capabilities today. The strategic importance of the release is heightened by Google's ambitious claims regarding the model's visual capabilities, particularly in creating web applications—an area where previous models have shown limitations.
Google's emphasis on visual capabilities and agentic coding applications suggests the company is positioning Gemini 2.5 for practical development tasks rather than purely academic applications. This focus on developer productivity could help differentiate Google's offering in a market where multiple reasoning models compete for attention.
The release also represents an important competitive response to OpenAI, which has gained significant momentum with its "o" series of models and recently released a higher-powered (and higher-priced) version called o1-pro. With Gemini 2.5, Google demonstrates its commitment to remaining at the forefront of AI development despite increasing competition from both established players and newer entrants like Anthropic and DeepSeek.
As the industry continues to evolve toward more thoughtful, deliberative AI systems, Google's comprehensive embrace of reasoning capabilities across its entire model lineup could reshape user expectations and establish new standards for AI performance. The ultimate impact will depend not only on benchmark scores but on how these capabilities translate to real-world applications and whether the benefits of more careful reasoning justify the additional computational costs and response times.

CIBC signs federal government's code of conduct for generative AI

CIBC AI Code of Conduct
CIBC has become the first major Canadian bank to sign the federal government's voluntary code of conduct for generative artificial intelligence. The bank, which introduced several generative AI pilot programs last year, aims to reinforce its commitment to responsible AI development and deployment, according to Dave Gillespie, CIBC's executive vice-president for infrastructure, architecture and modernization.
Ottawa launched the voluntary code in 2023, establishing six key principles including equity, transparency, and human oversight. Companies that sign the code agree to undertake measures to reduce AI risks, such as screening data sets for potential biases and monitoring systems for potential harms.
Why it matters: CIBC's participation signals growing financial sector alignment with national AI safety standards and highlights the private sector's role in shaping ethical AI adoption.

⚡ Trends for the Future
Earth AI Unearths Hidden Mineral Riches with Algorithms Trained on Decades of Data

Earth AI Mineral Discovery
The details:
Mining startup Earth AI has exclusively revealed to TechCrunch its discovery of promising critical mineral deposits in long-overlooked regions of Australia. This breakthrough follows mining company KoBold's announcement last summer of finding one of the world's largest copper deposits in Zambia in over a decade.
Earth AI identified deposits of copper, cobalt, and gold in Australia's Northern Territory, along with silver, molybdenum, and tin at another site in New South Wales, approximately 310 miles northwest of Sydney. These findings suggest that future mineral discoveries will increasingly emerge from artificial intelligence analyzing historical field data.
"The actual, real frontier [in mining] is not so much geographical as it is technological," explained Roman Teslyuk, Earth AI's founder and CEO.
Teslyuk, a Ukrainian native, developed the company during his doctoral studies at the University of Sydney, where he gained familiarity with Australia's mining industry. He recognized a valuable opportunity in the country's national archive of mining data, which contains exploration records dating back to the 1970s.
"For some reason, nobody's using them," Teslyuk noted. "If I could build an algorithm that can absorb all that knowledge and learn from the failures and successes of millions of geologists in the past, I can make much better predictions about where to find minerals in the future."
Earth AI initially launched as a software company focused on predicting potential deposits. However, facing skepticism from conservative mining industry customers unwilling to invest millions based on unproven technology, the company pivoted to developing its own drilling equipment to validate its software predictions.
After joining Y Combinator's spring 2019 cohort and spending years refining its technology, Earth AI secured a $20 million Series B funding round in January. While the company shares KoBold's AI-driven approach to mineral prospecting, Teslyuk emphasizes their different methodology. Earth AI's algorithms are trained to efficiently scan wide areas to identify deposits that traditional methods might miss.
"The way we used to explore for metals in the past, the 20th century, it just takes very, very long. It takes decades to find something," Teslyuk said. "With the modern pace of the world, you just can't wait for that long."
What makes this crucial: This technological approach to mineral exploration could prove crucial as demand for critical minerals continues to grow, particularly for materials essential to renewable energy technologies and electric vehicles.
