Good morning ☀️, leader of the next generation.

Sometimes we give technology too much credit or too much blame.

The truth is, it’s a tool. How we use it is what matters.

Used with purpose, it helps us see more clearly, build faster, and express ourselves in new ways.

It’s not about chasing trends. It’s about creating something real.

Alphabet acquires power company for $4.75 billion to fuel AI growth

Alphabet to buy Intersect Power to bypass energy grid bottlenecks

title image

Google's parent company Alphabet is making a massive $4.75 billion cash acquisition of Intersect Power, a specialized data center and clean energy developer, while also taking on the company's existing debt obligations. This strategic move represents Alphabet's bold attempt to secure reliable power infrastructure for its expanding artificial intelligence operations.

The deal, announced this Monday, addresses a critical challenge facing tech giants: securing adequate energy supply for power-hungry AI data centers without depending on overwhelmed local utility companies. As AI model training demands skyrocket, access to consistent, high-capacity power generation has become as crucial as computing hardware itself.

This isn't Alphabet's first involvement with Intersect Power. The tech giant previously held a minority stake in the company after Google and TPG Rise Climate spearheaded an impressive $800 million strategic funding round just last December. That initial partnership established an ambitious goal of mobilizing $20 billion in total investment by 2030, signaling the massive scale of infrastructure needed to support the AI revolution.

The acquisition structure is particularly interesting, as it includes Intersect's future development pipeline while excluding current operational facilities. These existing operations will be purchased by other investors and continue operating as an independent entity, allowing Alphabet to focus on upcoming projects tailored to its specific needs.

Intersect Power's innovative approach centers on creating "data parks" – strategically located facilities positioned adjacent to renewable energy sources including wind farms, solar installations, and battery storage systems. This co-location strategy eliminates traditional grid dependencies and transmission losses, providing direct access to clean energy generation.

According to Google's previous announcements, these new data parks are expected to begin operations by late next year, with full completion targeted for 2027. This timeline aligns with Alphabet's aggressive AI development schedule and growing computational requirements.

While Google will serve as the primary user of these facilities, Intersect's campus design philosophy embraces a multi-tenant industrial park model. This means other companies can co-locate their AI processing chips alongside Google's infrastructure, potentially creating new revenue streams and fostering industry collaboration.

The acquisition reflects broader industry trends as major technology companies scramble to secure reliable power sources. Traditional electrical grids are struggling to accommodate the exponential energy demands of AI training and inference, forcing companies to explore alternative solutions including direct partnerships with power generators and renewable energy developers.

This strategic move positions Alphabet ahead of competitors in addressing one of AI development's most significant bottlenecks. By controlling both the power generation and data center infrastructure, the company can ensure consistent energy availability while potentially reducing long-term operational costs.

The transaction is expected to finalize during the first half of next year, pending regulatory approvals and standard closing conditions. This timeline suggests Alphabet is prioritizing speed to capture competitive advantages in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

The deal underscores how AI development has transcended traditional software and hardware considerations, requiring massive infrastructure investments spanning energy generation, data centers, and specialized computing equipment. As AI capabilities continue expanding, access to reliable, scalable power infrastructure may determine which companies can successfully compete in this transformative technology sector.

Splat's app uses AI to turn your photos into coloring pages for kids

New AI app transforms any photo into printable coloring pages.

The team behind Retro, a photo-sharing app for close friends and family, has launched an innovative experiment in generative AI called Splat. This new app transforms any photograph into a coloring book page designed specifically for children, addressing a common parental challenge in the digital age.

While countless coloring pages exist online, many websites are cluttered with advertisements and difficult to navigate. Others charge fees for printable pages, which feels wasteful given how quickly children move through their art projects. Splat offers a cleaner, more accessible solution for parents seeking creative activities for their kids.

The app works simply: users take a photo or select one from their camera roll, then choose from various artistic styles including anime, 3D movie, manga, cartoon, or comic formats. The AI quickly processes the image, creating either an on-screen coloring experience or a printable page ready for physical coloring.

Splat's user-friendly design eliminates tedious sign-up processes. Instead, first-time users customize their experience by selecting preferred app icons and checking off categories their children enjoy, such as animals, space, flowers, fairy tales, robots, and cars. Parents can also choose between printable pages or on-screen coloring options, perfect for keeping kids engaged during unexpected downtime.

The app offers one free trial project, then requires either a $4.99 weekly subscription for 25 pages or $49.99 annually for 500 pages. A clever parental control system blocks children from accessing purchase options by requiring the parent's birth year.

Testing shows the app delivers on its promises with quick generation times, allowing rapid transformation from concept to ready-to-color artwork. Splat joins other AI-powered creativity tools like Stickerbox for printed stickers and Casio's personality-developing robotic pet Moflin.

Available on both iOS and Android platforms, Splat represents an exciting intersection of AI technology and childhood creativity.
