Google releases three new Gemini models — but no 3.5 Pro

Google DeepMind has released three new Gemini models: Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.5 Flash Cyber. The rollout signals Google's continued push toward faster, cheaper AI — but it also draws attention to what's still missing: an update to its flagship Gemini Pro model.

Gemini 3.6 Flash is positioned as Google's primary "workhorse model," offering improved performance across coding, knowledge work, and multimodal tasks. Notably, it reduces token usage by up to 17%, making it more affordable than its predecessor, Gemini 3.5 Flash. The model is aimed at developers and businesses building AI agents at scale, where cost efficiency and low latency matter most.

Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite takes cost-effectiveness even further, targeting use cases where budget is the top priority without sacrificing too much capability. Meanwhile, Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber is a specialized model fine-tuned specifically for identifying and remediating cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Due to the sensitive nature of its capabilities, this model will not be broadly available — it's being offered exclusively to governments and trusted partners through a limited access pilot program.

Google says the overarching goal of this release batch is to give developers the tools they need to build reliable, production-ready AI systems with better efficiency and faster response times. The Flash lineup has traditionally served that purpose, and these new additions continue that trend.

However, the release is drawing as much attention for what it lacks as for what it delivers. Gemini Pro — Google's most powerful model tier, designed for complex reasoning and advanced coding tasks — has not received an update since February. That's a notable gap, especially given the pace at which competitors have been shipping. OpenAI has released GPT-5.5 and is already rolling out GPT-5.6, while Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Sonnet 5, and expanded access to its frontier Fable 5 model.

The absence of a Pro update is not entirely surprising given recent reporting. In May, Google teased that a 3.5 Pro version was already in internal use and would be rolled out "next month." That timeline has clearly slipped. Last week, Bloomberg reported that Google is facing internal delays with Gemini 3.5 Pro, struggling to hit the performance benchmarks it set for itself before a public launch.

Google DeepMind product lead Logan Kilpatrick addressed the situation on Tuesday, confirming that Gemini 3.5 Pro is currently being tested with select partners and that the team hopes to launch it soon. He offered no specific date but struck an optimistic tone about its progress.

Kilpatrick also revealed something potentially more significant for the longer term: Google has begun its most ambitious pre-training run to date for Gemini 4. While details remain sparse, the announcement suggests that even as Google works to ship 3.5 Pro, its research teams are already focused on the next major generation of the model family.

For now, the three new Flash-tier models give developers more options at the lower end of the cost spectrum, with the cybersecurity-focused variant adding a specialized dimension to Google's AI portfolio. But with rivals continuing to push out frontier model updates at a rapid clip, the pressure on Google to deliver a meaningful Gemini Pro upgrade is only growing. How quickly it can close that gap — and whether Gemini 3.5 Pro lives up to expectations when it finally arrives — will be closely watched by the industry.

Anthropic's landmark $1.5B copyright settlement is approved

A federal judge has granted final approval of Anthropic's $1.5 billion settlement in a class action copyright lawsuit filed by authors and publishers. The payout amounts to $3,000 per work across an estimated 500,000 titles.

The court previously ruled that AI training on copyrighted text qualifies as fair use, but found Anthropic's use of pirate sites to source books illegal. Anthropic settled to avoid trial. Many authors remain unsatisfied, and broader copyright questions for AI companies like Google, Meta, and OpenAI remain unresolved in ongoing lawsuits.

US threatens sanctions against Chinese AI models over IP theft

US warns Chinese AI firms of sanctions if intellectual property theft is confirmed.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Tuesday that the U.S. government would scrutinize open source AI models from China for signs of intellectual property theft. Speaking on Fox Business, Bessent made clear that while the administration supports open source development, it will not tolerate IP theft — and is prepared to impose sanctions on Chinese AI companies if violations are found.

The warning comes as Chinese AI models continue to grow in capability and popularity. The latest example, Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, is seen as a direct competitive threat to leading American firms like OpenAI and Anthropic. Beyond market competition, the rise of these models could also affect those companies' abilities to attract the massive investments needed to develop next-generation AI.

The Biden administration had already restricted China's access to advanced chips and tightened export controls. Targeting AI models directly would represent a significant escalation in the broader technological rivalry between the two nations. On Monday, Axios also reported that the Trump administration is weighing a full ban on Chinese open source models, though that claim has been disputed.

At the heart of the debate is a technique called model distillation, which allows a smaller AI system to replicate some capabilities of a larger one. Not everyone agrees this constitutes theft. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently pushed back on that framing, pointing out the inconsistency of AI labs demanding open training rights while restricting distillation by others.

Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue also challenged the distillation narrative, arguing it plays only a minor role in China's AI progress. He credited China's strong research teams and their more collaborative, open approach to development as the real drivers — suggesting that sanctions alone may not address the underlying competitive dynamics at play.
