Google's Fourth of July ad reimagines the Founding Fathers using AI tools.

New Google commercial imagines a Declaration of Independence written with help from AI

To mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Google has released a new commercial with a playful twist: what if the Founding Fathers had access to Google Workspace?

Taglined "Group project, but make it 1776," the ad follows a fictionalized Thomas Jefferson mid-draft, interrupted by a nagging text from Ben Franklin. What follows is a very modern-looking collaboration — edits suggested in Google Docs, a meeting scheduled via Google Calendar, conducted remotely on Google Meet (with, humorously, every attendee's camera turned off), and the final document signed with e-signatures. Fireworks ensue.

Naturally, for a tech company ad in 2026, AI plays a supporting role. The fictional founders use Google's "help me visualize" tool to experiment with different animals for the national seal, Gemini quietly takes notes during the meeting, and the founders even consult the chatbot before rejecting King George III's document access request.

The tone throughout is lighthearted and self-aware — at one point Sam Adams asks, "Can we settle this over beers?" — and the AI elements are relatively understated compared to many recent tech advertisements. Notably, the commercial avoids any suggestion that AI actually improved the writing of the Declaration itself, a smart move given the backlash Google faced over a previous ad where a father used Gemini to write a fan letter on behalf of his daughter. The most AI-forward element may actually be the video footage itself, which carries the distinctive, slightly uncanny look of AI-generated visuals.

Reactions to the ad have been mixed. Comments on YouTube and Instagram skew mostly positive, but the response on Bluesky has been considerably more hostile. Users called the ad "cringey" and "stunningly tone deaf," with the AI angle drawing the most criticism. Ironically, several viewers — including historian Angus Johnston — pointed out that very little of the ad actually involves AI in any meaningful way.

"Even in a corny fantasy joke, it's impossible to make the case that AI is a useful tool for political organizing, writing, or human collaboration," Johnston wrote.

The ad reflects a broader tension in how tech companies are currently marketing AI — eager to embed it into everyday cultural moments, yet cautious enough to keep it in the background when the stakes feel too high. Whether that balance lands as charming or hollow seems to depend largely on who's watching.

Amazon's 20-year-old crowdsourcing platform nears its end after July 2026.

Amazon will stop accepting new customers for Mechanical Turk

Amazon's Mechanical Turk is winding down, with the platform closing to new customers on July 30, 2026. Launched in 2005, the crowdsourcing service paid workers small amounts to complete simple tasks like data labeling and sentiment analysis.

While existing customers can continue using the service, Amazon has confirmed no new features are planned. Once a hub for debates around crowdsourced labor ethics, the platform later supported AI training. Ironically, a 2023 study found nearly half of its workers were using AI to complete tasks — raising questions about whether the platform had already made itself obsolete.

Midjourney wants Hollywood studios to reveal the details of their AI usage

Midjourney pushes back against Hollywood studios by demanding disclosure of their own AI practices.

AI image startup Midjourney is fighting back against three major Hollywood studios in an ongoing legal battle, this time demanding that Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros. disclose details about their own internal use of artificial intelligence.

The legal conflict began when Disney and Universal sued Midjourney for alleged copyright infringement, claiming the startup's AI models could generate images of protected characters like Bart Simpson and Darth Vader. Warner Bros. followed with its own lawsuit shortly after. Midjourney has maintained that training its models on copyrighted images falls under fair use.

The latest dispute centers on the discovery process. A judge had previously ruled that the studios must provide information about their generative AI usage, but only when that usage resulted in consumer-facing content. Midjourney is now pushing to overturn that restriction, arguing it allows the studios to selectively share only the documents that support their own case while withholding evidence that could benefit Midjourney's defense.

The startup contends that the withheld documents could reveal whether the studios themselves are engaged in the very practices they are suing Midjourney for. Specifically, Midjourney argues that if the studios are using AI tools internally — such as for storyboarding or concept development — and those tools were trained on unlicensed copyrighted content, it would demonstrate that such practices are an accepted industry norm.

Midjourney is also requesting full disclosure of all prompts the studios have used within its platform, not just those tied to allegedly infringing outputs. The studios' lead attorney, David Singer, has dismissed these requests as a "fishing expedition," and clarified that the studios are not seeking to shut down Midjourney entirely, but simply want the company to stop reproducing their copyrighted characters without authorization.
