Google expands AI-powered search to five additional languages globally
Google's AI Mode adds 5 new languages including Hindi, Japanese, and Korean

Google has significantly expanded its AI Mode search experience by adding support for five new languages, marking a major step toward global accessibility after months of English-only availability. The tech giant announced that users can now interact with AI Mode in Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese.
This language expansion comes on the heels of AI Mode's rollout to 180 new markets in English last month. The feature initially launched in the United States before expanding to the United Kingdom and India, and now serves users across multiple continents in their native languages.
"With this expansion, more people can now use AI Mode to ask complex questions in their preferred language, while exploring the web more deeply," explained Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management at Google Search, in the company's official announcement.
AI Mode represents Google's strategic response to competing AI search platforms like Perplexity and OpenAI's ChatGPT Search. The feature harnesses a customized version of Gemini 2.5, incorporating advanced multimodal and reasoning capabilities that allow users to engage with search results in more conversational and nuanced ways.
Originally launched as an experimental feature for Google One AI Premium subscribers in March, AI Mode has evolved considerably since its debut. The platform now offers more than just enhanced search results – it's positioning itself as an intelligent assistant capable of handling complex, multi-step queries.
In August, Google introduced groundbreaking agentic features to AI Mode, enabling the system to actively find restaurant reservations for users. The company has ambitious plans to extend these capabilities to local service appointments and event ticket bookings, though these advanced features remain limited to specific user groups.
Currently, these cutting-edge agentic capabilities are exclusively available to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States through the "Agentic capabilities in AI Mode" experiment in Labs. Access to the Ultra tier comes with a premium price tag of $249.99 per month, reflecting the sophisticated technology involved.
Users can access AI Mode through a dedicated tab on search results pages or via a prominent button in the search bar. However, Google appears to have bigger plans for this AI-powered experience. Logan Kilpatrick, group product manager at Google DeepMind, recently suggested that the company is working toward making AI-led search the default experience "soon," responding to user inquiries on social media platform X.
The expansion hasn't been without controversy. Google's recent AI initiatives, including both AI Mode and AI Overviews, have faced criticism from website owners and publishers who argue that these features negatively impact click-through rates to their sites. Critics worry that users might find answers directly in AI-generated responses without visiting the original sources.
Google has pushed back against these concerns, explicitly denying last month that its AI search features are significantly harming website traffic. The company maintains that its AI tools enhance the search experience while still driving valuable traffic to web publishers.
The language expansion reflects Google's commitment to democratizing AI-powered search technology globally. By supporting major languages like Hindi, Japanese, and Korean, Google is tapping into massive user bases across Asia while also serving Portuguese-speaking users in Brazil, one of Latin America's largest markets.
This multilingual approach positions Google to compete more effectively with regional search engines and AI platforms that have traditionally served non-English speaking markets. As AI search technology continues evolving, language accessibility becomes increasingly crucial for maintaining global market dominance.
The expansion signals Google's confidence in AI Mode's capabilities and its readiness to scale the technology across diverse linguistic and cultural contexts. For millions of users worldwide, this development represents their first opportunity to experience AI-powered search in their native languages, potentially transforming how they discover and interact with information online.

Anthropic backs California AI transparency bill amid industry opposition
Anthropic endorses California's AI safety bill, SB 53

Anthropic officially endorsed California's SB 53, a bill requiring transparency from major AI developers. The legislation mandates safety frameworks, public reports, and whistleblower protections while targeting "catastrophic risks" like biological weapons creation.
Despite opposition from tech groups and concerns about interstate commerce, Anthropic argues governance can't wait for federal action. The bill focuses solely on companies generating over $500 million revenue, making it more modest than previous attempts.

Ottawa working on public registry of AI use

Federal government plans public AI registry amid growing departmental usage.
The federal government is developing a public registry to track its expanding use of artificial intelligence across departments. Kara Beckles from the Treasury Board says there's currently no comprehensive list of AI projects underway, as departments have been experimenting independently with various AI implementations.
Government AI applications include Fisheries and Oceans Canada using AI to locate lost fishing gear, Agriculture Canada processing satellite data for crop yield predictions, and Transport Canada screening high-risk air cargo. These initiatives are now being coordinated under a new AI strategy launched this year.
In business news, Vancouver-based Teck Resources Ltd. and Anglo American plc announced a merger to form the Anglo Teck group, creating a global critical minerals champion and major copper producer. British Columbia has ordered forage farmers to cease irrigation due to severely low water flows threatening endangered chinook salmon. The directive affects 490 users in the Salmon River and Bessette Creek watersheds, including grass, alfalfa, and corn growers. Nineteen licensees must also stop using water for lawns and industrial purposes.
