Google launches affordable AI subscription across 40+ global markets
Google's cheaper AI Plus plan is now available in over 40 countries

Google has significantly expanded its affordable AI Plus subscription plan, making it accessible to users across more than 40 countries worldwide. This strategic rollout targets emerging markets where the company's standard $20 monthly AI subscription may be prohibitively expensive for many potential users.
The expanded availability includes diverse markets across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Countries now served include Angola, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Philippines, Senegal, Uganda, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe, among others.
Initially launched in Indonesia earlier this month at Rp 75,000 (approximately $4.50) per month, the AI Plus plan is priced around $5 monthly across most participating countries. To make the offering even more attractive, Google is providing a 50% discount for the first six months in select markets, including Nepal and Mexico, effectively bringing the initial cost down to just $2.50 per month.
The Plus tier subscription provides substantial value for its price point. Subscribers gain access to Google's advanced Gemini 2.5 Pro AI model, along with cutting-edge creative tools including Flow, Whisk, and Veo 3 Fast for image and video generation. The plan also enhances the functionality of NotebookLM, Google's AI-powered research assistant, providing users with more advanced features for productivity and research tasks.
Integration across Google's productivity suite is another key benefit. Plus subscribers can leverage AI capabilities directly within Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Sheets, streamlining workflow and enhancing productivity. Additionally, users receive 200GB of cloud storage, providing ample space for documents, photos, and other digital assets.
The timing of Google's expansion appears strategic, coming just one day after OpenAI rolled out its competing sub-$5 ChatGPT Go plan to Indonesia. This parallel timing suggests intense competition between the AI giants for market share in price-sensitive regions. Interestingly, India—where OpenAI initially debuted its ChatGPT Go service—is notably absent from Google's current expansion list, potentially indicating different market strategies or regulatory considerations.
Both companies maintain their premium $20 monthly subscriptions for users seeking full-featured AI services. However, these new budget-friendly tiers represent a clear acknowledgment that a one-size-fits-all pricing model doesn't work globally. The move reflects the companies' understanding that economic conditions vary dramatically across different markets, and successful AI adoption requires pricing strategies that account for local purchasing power.
This expansion strategy could prove pivotal for Google's AI market penetration. By making advanced AI tools accessible at lower price points, the company positions itself to capture a broader user base in emerging markets, potentially building long-term loyalty among users who might eventually upgrade to premium tiers as their needs and economic situations evolve.
The competitive landscape in affordable AI subscriptions is clearly heating up, with both Google and OpenAI recognizing that the future of AI adoption lies not just in advanced capabilities, but in making those capabilities accessible to users worldwide, regardless of their economic circumstances.

Cohere secures $100M funding extension, reaches $7B valuation
Cohere hits $7B valuation a month after its last raise, partners with AMD

Enterprise AI company Cohere raised an additional $100 million, boosting its valuation to $7 billion just one month after its previous funding round. The company also announced a strategic partnership with AMD, enabling its Command-family AI models to run on AMD's Instinct GPUs while maintaining Nvidia support.
Despite impressive growth since its 2019 founding by transformer co-author Aidan Gomez, Cohere trails competitors OpenAI ($500B valuation) and Anthropic ($183B). The company targets enterprises prioritizing AI sovereignty, attracting new investors including Business Development Bank of Canada and Nexxus Capital Management.

Google makes real-world data more accessible to AI — and training pipelines will love it

Google launches Data Commons MCP Server for natural language access.
Google has launched the Data Commons Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server, transforming how AI systems access real-world statistics and public datasets. This new tool enables developers, data scientists, and AI agents to query vast amounts of verified information using simple natural language commands.
The Data Commons platform, originally launched in 2018, organizes public datasets from government surveys, administrative data, and international organizations like the United Nations. With the MCP Server integration, this treasure trove of information becomes directly accessible to AI systems through conversational prompts.
This development addresses a critical challenge in AI training: the reliance on noisy, unverified web data that often leads to hallucinations. When AI systems lack reliable sources, they tend to fabricate information to fill gaps. By providing access to structured, verifiable datasets, Google aims to ground AI responses in factual information.
"The Model Context Protocol is letting us use the intelligence of the large language model to pick the right data at the right time, without having to understand how we model the data, how our API works," explained Google Data Commons head Prem Ramaswami.
The MCP standard, introduced by Anthropic in November, has gained adoption from major tech companies including OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google. It provides a common framework for AI systems to access various data sources through contextual prompts.
Google has already demonstrated the technology's potential through a partnership with the ONE Campaign, a nonprofit focused on African economic and health initiatives. Together, they created the ONE Data Agent, which surfaces millions of financial and health data points in plain language.
The open-source nature of the Data Commons MCP Server makes it compatible with any large language model. Developers can access it through multiple channels, including the Agent Development Kit in Colab notebooks, Gemini CLI, or any MCP-compatible client using the PyPI package, with example code available on GitHub.
