Google launches advanced Gemini AI assistant in millions of cars

Google's Gemini AI assistant is hitting the road in millions of vehicles

Google is revolutionizing the in-car experience by bringing its advanced Gemini AI assistant to vehicles with Google built-in, replacing the current Google Assistant with more sophisticated conversational capabilities. This significant upgrade represents Google's ambitious push to integrate cutting-edge AI technology into the automotive industry.

The rollout comes on the heels of General Motors' announcement that Gemini will be available in approximately 4 million vehicles from model year 2022 and newer, including popular brands like Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC. However, Google's broader announcement suggests the AI assistant won't be limited to GM vehicles alone, indicating partnerships with additional automakers.

Starting in the United States with English-language support, the Gemini rollout will expand to other regions and languages in the coming months. A key advantage is that the upgrade isn't exclusive to new vehicles – existing compatible cars will receive Gemini through software updates, making the technology accessible to current owners.

The enhanced AI assistant promises a more natural, conversational driving experience. Instead of rigid voice commands, drivers can speak freely to accomplish various tasks. For example, a driver could request "a highly rated sit-down restaurant with outdoor seating along my route for lunch," and Gemini will leverage Google Maps data to provide relevant suggestions while handling follow-up questions about parking availability, menu options, and dietary preferences.

Beyond restaurant recommendations, Gemini can perform essential vehicle functions like adjusting temperature controls, providing navigation directions, suggesting music, retrieving vehicle information, summarizing incoming messages, and enabling hands-free responses. This comprehensive functionality aims to keep drivers focused on the road while maintaining connectivity and convenience.

A standout feature is Gemini Live, currently in beta testing, which facilitates open-ended, real-time conversations. Drivers can activate this mode by tapping an interface button or saying "Hey Google, let's talk," enabling brainstorming sessions, learning opportunities, or casual discussions during drives. This feature transforms the vehicle into an interactive companion for longer journeys.

Accessing Gemini is straightforward for drivers signed into their Google accounts in compatible vehicles. They'll receive prompts to upgrade, after which they can interact with the AI through voice commands, the on-screen microphone, or steering wheel controls, ensuring multiple convenient activation methods.

Google has outlined ambitious expansion plans, including support for additional languages and regions. Future updates are expected to deepen integration with Google's ecosystem of services, including Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home, creating a seamless connected experience between vehicles and users' digital lives.

This development marks a significant milestone in automotive technology, as Google built-in first launched in 2020. The introduction of Gemini represents the natural evolution of in-car AI, moving beyond basic voice commands to sophisticated conversational interactions that could fundamentally change how drivers interact with their vehicles.

X announces a rebuilt ad platform powered by AI

X launches AI-powered advertising platform to win back advertisers.

Elon Musk's X is making another attempt to attract advertisers with a completely rebuilt, AI-powered advertising platform that began rolling out on Thursday. The move comes as the company continues working to restore its advertising revenue following significant challenges in the early years of Musk's ownership.

The social media platform initially struggled with ad revenue growth, prompting a strategic shift toward alternative monetization methods including AI services and subscription models. However, recent forecasts from eMarketer suggest the tide is turning, with projected ad revenue of $2.26 billion in 2025, climbing to $2.46 billion in 2026. While these figures represent only half of Twitter's 2021 advertising business, they indicate positive momentum.

X's new advertising platform features what the company describes as more advanced "retrieval and ranking systems" powered by artificial intelligence. These technological improvements are designed to simplify campaign creation for marketers while providing enhanced control over their advertising efforts. The AI integration promises better campaign results, more relevant ad placements, and improved targeting precision.

Monique Pintarelli, head of global advertising at xAI, emphasized the ambitious nature of the project in a statement. "Very few companies would have the ambition and technical courage to completely rebuild their entire advertising platform in such a short timeframe," she said. The new system is designed to enable rapid integration of future innovations and continuous platform improvements.

The platform rebuild aligns with broader industry trends where AI has become a significant driver of advertising revenue growth. Recent earnings reports from tech giants like Google and Meta demonstrate how AI systems are revolutionizing digital advertising by automating various marketing processes, from ad creation to targeting and measurement. This automation has particularly benefited smaller businesses by providing access to sophisticated tools previously available only to large corporations.
