Google appoints former CharacterAI founder as co-lead of its AI models

Google has appointed Noam Shazeer, former head of Character.AI, as co-lead of its Gemini AI project. Key points include:

  • Shazeer joins Jeff Dean and Oriol Vinyals in leading Gemini

  • He returns to Google after founding Character.AI in 2021

  • Google paid billions to bring Shazeer and select employees into DeepMind

  • Gemini models are being integrated into Google Search and Pixel smartphones

  • Shazeer co-authored a seminal 2017 AI research paper that catalyzed the current AI boom

  • Character.AI, valued at $1 billion, raised $193 million from venture capitalists

  • Google's move mirrors similar talent acquisitions by Amazon and Microsoft

  • These deals face potential regulatory scrutiny from the FTC

  • A recent U.S. court ruling found Google's search engine violated antitrust law

This high-profile appointment underscores Google's aggressive push to maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, while navigating complex regulatory challenges. Shazeer's expertise and track record in AI development make him a valuable asset as Google aims to strengthen its position in the AI arms race against rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. Read more

DeepMind workers sign letter in protest of Google’s defense contracts

Today, over 200 DeepMind employees expressed their discontent with Google's defense contracts by circulating an internal letter dated May 16. The letter criticizes Google's engagements with military organizations, which the signatories believe compromise their leadership in ethical and responsible AI. This disagreement highlights a cultural clash within the organization, emphasizing a deviation from Google's 2018 commitment that DeepMind's technology would not be used for military or surveillance purposes. AI is a new digital frontier that will expand human potential.

Satya Nadella

Satya Narayana Nadella is an Indian-American business executive. He is the executive chairman and CEO of Microsoft, succeeding Steve Ballmer in 2014 as CEO and John W. Thompson in 2021 as chairman.

Tidal, a recent spinout from Alphabet X's "moonshot factory," aims to revolutionize salmon aquaculture with advanced technology. Quietly launched in mid-July, Tidal's mission is to "feed humanity sustainably" by focusing on the rapidly growing salmon farming industry, which accounts for 70% of the market.

Based in Trondheim, Norway, Tidal employs a combination of sensors, robotics, data science, and AI to provide farmers with comprehensive insights into their harvests. The system monitors fish, offers yield estimates, and detects potential issues like sea lice before they become serious problems.

Tidal has already deployed 230 systems in Norway and has worked with farmers in Chile and Brazil. The company plans to double or triple its deployed systems over the next couple of years as it enters "full growth mode."

While Alphabet remains a minority owner, Tidal has begun pursuing external funding. Perry Creek Capital led its most recent round, with support from Ichthus Venture Capital and Futurum Ventures.

Tidal's spinout follows Alphabet's recent trend of tightening its "other bets," with other X projects like Mineral and Skip also becoming independent. As Tidal transitions to an independent company, it exemplifies Alphabet X's approach of incubating innovative technologies before launching them as standalone ventures.

Canadian Advisory Body Urges Transparency in AI Use by National Security Agencies

Key Points:

  1. Recommendations: The National Security Transparency Advisory Group has called on Canadian security agencies to publish detailed descriptions of their current and planned uses of artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

  2. Legislative Changes: The group recommends amending proposed legislation to ensure oversight of AI use by federal agencies.

  3. Expanding AI Use: Security agencies are increasingly using AI for tasks such as document translation, malware detection, and large-scale data analysis.

  4. Transparency Challenges: The "black box" nature of AI algorithms poses difficulties in explaining their workings to the public.

  5. Agency Responses:

    • The Communications Security Establishment (CSE) cited limitations due to national security concerns.

    • The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) emphasized ongoing work to formalize AI governance plans.

    • The RCMP is developing a national policy on AI use and plans to publish a transparency blueprint.

  6. Privacy Concerns: Previous issues, such as the RCMP's use of facial recognition software, highlight the need for improved oversight.

  7. Government Action: Ottawa has issued guidance on federal AI use and introduced the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act, but these don't fully cover security agencies.

Implications:

  • The recommendations aim to balance national security needs with public transparency and trust.

  • Implementing these suggestions could set new standards for AI governance in sensitive government sectors.

  • The response highlights the tension between transparency and the secretive nature of national security work.

Next Steps:

  • Public Safety Canada has shared the recommendations with relevant departments and committees.

  • The government's response and potential implementation timeline remain unclear.

  • The advisory group calls for a formal review of the government's transparency commitment, including public reporting on progress and future activities.

This push for transparency in AI use by national security agencies reflects growing concerns about the ethical implications and public oversight of advanced technologies in sensitive government operations.
