Cohere unveils open multilingual AI models supporting 70+ languages
Cohere launches a family of open multilingual models
Enterprise artificial intelligence company Cohere has introduced a groundbreaking family of multilingual AI models called Tiny Aya, unveiled during the India AI Summit. These innovative models represent a significant leap forward in making AI accessible across diverse linguistic communities worldwide.
The Tiny Aya models are open-weight, meaning their underlying code is freely available for public use and modification. Supporting over 70 languages, these models can operate on standard devices like laptops without requiring an internet connection, making them particularly valuable for regions with limited connectivity.
Developed by Cohere Labs, the company's research division, the models show strong support for South Asian languages including Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, and Marathi. The base model features 3.35 billion parameters, indicating its substantial size and computational complexity.
The family includes several specialized variants designed for different global regions and use cases. TinyAya-Global serves as a fine-tuned version optimized for following user commands in applications requiring broad language support. Regional variants include TinyAya-Earth for African languages, TinyAya-Fire specifically for South Asian languages, and TinyAya-Water covering Asia Pacific, West Asia, and European languages.
According to Cohere's official statement, this targeted approach enables each model to develop stronger linguistic foundations and cultural understanding, creating systems that feel more natural and reliable for the communities they serve. Despite their regional focus, all Tiny Aya models maintain comprehensive multilingual coverage, providing flexible starting points for further adaptation and research.
The models were trained using relatively modest computing resources on a single cluster of 64 H100 GPUs, Nvidia's high-powered chips. This efficient training approach makes them ideal for researchers and developers creating applications for native language speakers. The models' ability to run directly on devices enables developers to build offline translation capabilities and other language-processing applications.
Cohere emphasized that their underlying software architecture was specifically designed for on-device usage, requiring significantly less computing power than comparable models in the market. This efficiency is particularly crucial in linguistically diverse countries like India, where offline-friendly capabilities can unlock numerous applications without requiring constant internet connectivity.
Developers can access these models through multiple platforms, including HuggingFace, the popular AI model sharing platform, and the Cohere Platform. Downloads are available on HuggingFace, Kaggle, and Ollama for local deployment. The company is also releasing comprehensive training and evaluation datasets on HuggingFace and plans to publish a detailed technical report outlining their training methodology.
This launch comes as Cohere continues its strong growth trajectory. CEO Aidan Gomez previously indicated the company plans to go public "soon." According to CNBC reports, Cohere concluded 2025 with impressive financial performance, achieving $240 million in annual recurring revenue while maintaining 50% quarter-over-quarter growth throughout the year.
The release of Tiny Aya models represents Cohere's commitment to democratizing AI technology across linguistic barriers, potentially enabling a new generation of culturally aware and locally relevant AI applications for diverse global communities.

Andreessen Horowitz partners travel globally to discover promising startups early.
Gabriel Vasquez, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, made nine flights from NYC to Stockholm in one year while hunting for Swedish unicorns. His efforts recently paid off when a16z led a $2.3 million pre-seed round into Dentio, a Swedish AI startup helping dentists with administrative work.
Stockholm has become a strategic focus for a16z following their successful investment in Skype, co-founded by Swedish entrepreneur Niklas Zennström. The firm now closely tracks ecosystems like SSE Business Lab, the Stockholm School of Economics' startup incubator that has produced companies like Klarna, Legora, and Voi.
Dentio was founded by three former high school classmates – Elias Afrasiabi, Anton Li, and Lukas Sjögren – who reconnected as students at SSE and KTH. The idea came from Li's mother, a dentist who complained about administrative work detracting from patient care. Their initial product uses AI to generate clinical notes from recordings, but the founders recognize that AI scribes may become commoditized.
To differentiate itself from competitors like Tandem Health, which raised $50 million for multi-specialty medical AI, Dentio focuses exclusively on dentists while planning international expansion. "We think it's possible to build a unified way of handling administration all over Europe, and maybe even all over the world," Afrasiabi said.
Dentio emphasizes its "Made in Sweden" branding and EU compliance for data processing, appealing to privacy-conscious European customers. The startup didn't actively seek investors – word spread through referrals until it reached a16z in the U.S.
This isn't coincidental. A16z has built a global scouting network, partnering with successful founders like Fredrik Hjelm (Voi) and Johannes Schildt (Kry) to identify local talent. For Vasquez, who also scouts in Brazil, this represents "a pattern of great global companies being born abroad and scaling quickly." He believes AI serves as "the great equalizer" and that "Silicon Valley is a state of mind."
