Nvidia considers boosting H200 chip production amid Chinese demand surge
Nvidia reportedly weighs ramping up H200 production to meet surging demand in China
Nvidia is exploring the possibility of increasing production of its H200 graphics processing units following overwhelming demand from Chinese companies, according to a recent Reuters report citing anonymous industry sources.
This development comes after the chipmaker successfully lobbied the Trump administration to authorize sales of H200 chips to China. The Department of Commerce approved these sales last week, but with a significant condition: Nvidia must surrender 25% of revenue from H200 sales in the Chinese market.
The H200 represents Nvidia's most advanced offering from its previous Hopper generation of GPUs, specifically designed for training large language models and AI applications. These chips were previously banned from sale in China under Biden administration regulations that restricted exports of cutting-edge AI hardware to the country due to national security concerns.
Chinese technology giants are already positioning themselves to secure substantial orders of the limited-production H200 chips. Major companies including Alibaba and ByteDance, both actively developing proprietary AI models, have reportedly initiated discussions with Nvidia regarding large-scale purchases.
The H200 chips offer significantly enhanced capabilities compared to Nvidia's H20 GPUs, which were specifically modified and downgraded to comply with previous export restrictions for the Chinese market. This performance gap has created substantial pent-up demand among Chinese firms seeking more powerful hardware for their AI development initiatives.
However, the approval process isn't complete. While the U.S. has granted export permission, Chinese government officials are still deliberating whether to approve imports of the H200 chips. This regulatory uncertainty adds another layer of complexity to the potential production expansion.
For Nvidia, ramping up H200 production would unlock access to China's massive AI market, where companies are aggressively pursuing artificial intelligence capabilities. The restriction on advanced chip imports has forced Chinese firms to prioritize efficiency and optimization over raw computational power in their AI development strategies.
The broader context involves intensifying competition between the U.S. and China in artificial intelligence development. Western export controls and national security considerations have limited China's access to the most sophisticated AI training hardware, prompting the country to accelerate development of domestic semiconductor alternatives.
Chinese companies have been working around hardware limitations by focusing on algorithmic improvements and more efficient use of available computing resources. However, access to more powerful chips like the H200 could significantly accelerate their AI model development timelines.
Nvidia addressed supply chain concerns in a statement, emphasizing its commitment to existing customers: "We are managing our supply chain to ensure that licensed sales of the H200 to authorized customers in China will have no impact on our ability to supply customers in the United States."
The production ramp-up consideration reflects the delicate balance Nvidia must maintain between capitalizing on Chinese demand and adhering to U.S. foreign policy objectives. The 25% revenue sharing requirement with the U.S. government demonstrates the strategic importance American officials place on maintaining oversight of advanced AI chip exports.
This development could significantly impact the global AI hardware landscape, potentially accelerating Chinese AI capabilities while generating substantial revenue for Nvidia, albeit with reduced margins due to the government revenue-sharing arrangement.
Berlin startup secures major funding for AI audio generation
Mirelo raises $41M from Index and a16z to solve AI video's silent problem
Berlin-based Mirelo has secured $41 million in seed funding from Index Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz to address AI video's audio gap. The startup's SFX v1.5 model adds synchronized sound effects to videos by interpreting visual content.

First Voyage raises $2.5M for its AI companion that helps you build habits
AI companion app Momo helps users build habits through gamified self-care.
In an era dominated by AI-generated content, startup First Voyage is taking a different approach by helping people build meaningful habits through their AI companion app called Momo Self Care. The app features a digital pet named Momo that users can nurture while receiving reminders to complete habit-building tasks.
The concept works similarly to popular productivity apps like Focus Friend, where users set up task reminders and earn coins for completion. These coins can be used to purchase customization items for their digital pet. Additionally, users can engage in conversations with Momo about self-care, with the AI providing personalized habit recommendations based on individual goals.
"Momo helps users become the best versions of themselves, and users reward Momo with care, affection, and cute accessories," explained co-founder and CEO Besart Çopa, who launched the company alongside CTO Egehan Ozsoy.
The startup announced on Monday that it has secured $2.5 million in seed funding from notable investors including a16z speedrun, SignalFire, and True Global. This success comes as Momo users have already created over 2 million tasks on the platform, with the most popular habits focusing on productivity, spirituality, and mindfulness.
While concerns exist about AI companions potentially causing harm, Çopa believes human-AI relationships will continue growing. He emphasized that focusing on wellness and self-care applications is preferable to apps targeting base urges, noting that Momo includes safety guardrails and prompt filters to maintain appropriate boundaries in conversations.
The fresh funding will support Momo's Android launch, as the app is currently available only on iOS. The team also plans to enhance Momo's intelligence and interaction capabilities. "We hope Momo and the community around it become a defining consumer brand that uses the best of AI, animation, and gamification to improve as many lives as possible," Çopa stated.
