OpenAI has launched ChatGPT GO, a new budget-friendly subscription plan exclusively for Indian users, priced at ₹399 per month ($4.60). This represents a significant 80% discount compared to the existing Plus Plan, which costs ₹1,999 (approximately $23) monthly.

The launch comes alongside OpenAI's introduction of local currency pricing and UPI (Unified Payment Interface) payment support, making the service more accessible to Indian consumers. UPI is India's widely-adopted digital payment framework that enables seamless transactions.

Nick Turley, VP at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT, explained that the GO plan delivers substantial value improvements over the free tier. Users will receive 10 times more message capacity, enhanced image generation capabilities, and increased file upload limits. Additionally, the plan features improved memory retention, enabling more personalized and contextual responses.

"Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users! We're rolling out Go in India first and will learn from feedback before expanding to other countries," Turley stated. The company plans to use Indian market feedback to refine the offering before global expansion.

The strategic pricing addresses a significant barrier for Indian users. Previously, the Plus plan's local currency conversion made it more expensive than the standard $20 international price point. The GO plan specifically targets users primarily interested in chat functionality, image generation, and file processing without requiring the full feature set of the premium tier.

Software engineer Tibor Blaho, known for accurately predicting AI product launches, had previously leaked details about this plan. While currently geo-restricted to India, OpenAI has confirmed on its support page that expansion to additional regions is under consideration.

The launch timing aligns with ChatGPT's impressive growth trajectory. Turley recently revealed that the platform now serves over 700 million weekly users globally, representing a 40% increase from 500 million users in March. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has identified India as the company's second-largest market, making it a critical region for expansion.

India's importance to OpenAI becomes clear through download statistics. According to app analytics firm AppFigures, India leads globally in ChatGPT app downloads with over 29 million downloads in the last 90 days across all platforms. However, revenue conversion has been challenging, with only $3.6 million generated from Indian users during this period, highlighting the pricing sensitivity in the market.

The affordable pricing strategy addresses India's vast internet user base of over 850 million people. OpenAI isn't alone in recognizing this opportunity – competitors are also making strategic moves to capture Indian users. Last month, AI search company Perplexity partnered with telecom provider Airtel to offer free Perplexity Pro subscriptions. Similarly, Google launched a free one-year AI Pro plan specifically for Indian students.

While OpenAI's approach doesn't include free offerings, the localized and affordable pricing strategy is expected to significantly improve subscription conversion rates. The GO plan bridges the gap between the free tier's limitations and the Plus plan's premium pricing, potentially unlocking a substantial revenue stream from price-sensitive users.

The introduction of ChatGPT GO reflects OpenAI's broader strategy to customize offerings for different markets based on local economic conditions and user behavior. By starting with India, the company can test market response and optimize the plan before potential global rollout.

This move could set a precedent for tiered, region-specific pricing in the AI industry, particularly in emerging markets where purchasing power varies significantly from developed economies. The success of ChatGPT GO in India may influence how AI companies approach international expansion and pricing strategies moving forward.

Grammarly has unveiled a comprehensive new document-based interface that leverages technology from Coda, the productivity startup it acquired last year. This enhanced platform represents a significant evolution in the company's approach to writing assistance, incorporating advanced AI capabilities designed to serve both students and professionals.

The redesigned interface embraces a block-first methodology, allowing users to seamlessly integrate various elements including tables, columns, separators, lists, and headers into their documents. Users can also incorporate rich text blocks to emphasize important information and add helpful tips or alerts throughout their content.

Central to the new experience is an AI assistant housed in a convenient sidebar. This intelligent companion can summarize lengthy texts, respond to user inquiries, and offer personalized writing suggestions to improve document quality and clarity.

The platform now includes several specialized AI tools tailored for different use cases. The "Reader Reactions" feature enables users to select specific reader personas and receive targeted feedback based on their chosen audience. The "Grader" tool provides constructive feedback aligned with instructor guidelines and publicly available course materials, making it particularly valuable for academic settings. The "Citation Finder" streamlines the research process by helping users locate and generate proper citations from public sources, while the "Paraphraser" can adjust text tone according to user preferences.

Grammarly has also introduced agents capable of detecting both plagiarism and AI-generated content. Luke Behnke, VP of enterprise product at Grammarly, acknowledged that AI detection tools can be inconsistent but emphasized that the company has fine-tuned its technology to achieve market-leading accuracy.

The company clarifies that its AI detection tool isn't meant as an enforcement mechanism for educators but rather as a learning tool that provides students insight into potentially AI-generated content before submission. This approach reflects Grammarly's stated "moral imperative" to educate students about AI usage and prepare them for modern workplace demands.

This development aligns with Grammarly's broader strategy of integrating more AI agents across its product suite, demonstrated by its recent acquisition of email client Superhuman. The company raised $1 billion from General Catalyst in May to fund acquisitions and expand its sales and marketing capabilities.
