New NVIDIA Research Boosts Weather Prediction, Climate Simulation

NVIDIA Research has unveiled StormCast, a generative AI model for emulating high-fidelity atmospheric dynamics. Key points include:

  • Purpose: Enables reliable weather prediction at mesoscale, critical for disaster planning

  • Capabilities:

    • 3-kilometer, hourly scale predictions

    • Up to 10% more accurate than NOAA's operational model for 6-hour forecasts

    • Predicts over 100 variables, including temperature, moisture, wind, and rainfall

    • First AI model to confirm realistic 3D storm evolution

StormCast builds on NVIDIA's Earth-2 digital twin platform and CorrDiff model, offering:

  • Improved accuracy and speed in weather prediction

  • Significant cost and energy reduction compared to traditional methods

The model was trained on 3.5 years of NOAA climate data from the central U.S. using NVIDIA accelerated computing.

Scientists view StormCast as a significant step towards high-resolution weather prediction, addressing challenges in forecasting organized thunderstorms and winter precipitation.

NVIDIA's research aims to enable a new era of vital climate research and prediction. Read more

Procreate takes a stand against generative AI, vows to never incorporate the tech into its products

Procreate, the popular iPad design app, has publicly declared it will not incorporate generative AI into its products. The company emphasizes its commitment to supporting human creativity rather than following a trend that could potentially undermine it. This stance has garnered significant support from the digital art community, distinguishing Procreate from other apps that have adopted AI features. The company's CEO, James Cuda, strongly expressed his disapproval of generative AI in a recent video, reinforcing the brand's dedication to human artists. Read more

You see, back in the 1400s information spread extremely slowly.

Every book had to be painfully written by hand.

Until 1440 when the invention of the printing press changed EVERYTHING.

In the early 90’s the same thing happened with the internet.

And the same thing is happening now with marketing.

A few years ago only the biggest companies with huge budgets could afford to use Artificial Intelligence.

With the invention of ChatGPT, the power to create amazing marketing materials, online courses, and even websites has been spread to the masses.

The problem was that unless you were a “prompt engineer” and spent countless hours learning how to use it, you’d never get quality results.

Thanks to my good friend and A.I. expert Matt Leitz, that has all changed now.

Matt has figured out a way for you to not only “use ChatGPT”, but instead to actually make ChatGPT go to work FOR YOU. No need to prompt or engineer anything.

Imagine it as a printing press that cranked out leads and sales 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on autopilot.

AI is one of the most profound things we’re working on as humanity. It’s more profound than fire or electricity.

Sundar Pichai

Pichai Sundararajan, better known as Sundar Pichai, is an Indian-born American business executive. He is the chief executive officer of Alphabet Inc. and its subsidiary Google. Pichai began his career as a materials engineer.

Foley & Lardner LLP's Boston Health Care AI & Technology Investor Summit highlighted key themes surrounding the rollout of AI in healthcare. The event emphasized the importance of corporate governance in combating high-risk AI, urging businesses to establish structures for vetting, overseeing, and monitoring AI implementation. The White House's "Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights" was referenced as a guide for ethical AI design and use.

The summit explored AI's potential to reduce physician burnout by supporting professionals rather than replacing them. AI solutions can help clinicians review patient records, suggest treatments, and assist in medical imaging analysis. However, measuring the return on investment for such supportive technologies remains challenging.

Looking forward, the regulatory landscape for AI in healthcare is evolving. States like Utah, Florida, and Colorado have passed early regulations, signaling the direction of future legislation. Companies have an opportunity to influence AI policy by modeling ethical and safe use standards.

The healthcare industry must balance the excitement of AI adoption with existing obligations, such as patient privacy protection and preventing discriminatory outcomes. As AI integration in clinical settings continues, stakeholders must navigate this complex landscape carefully, considering both the potential benefits and risks of this transformative technology.

AI Boom Drives Surge in Data Center Water Usage

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) is leading to a significant increase in water consumption by data centers, raising concerns about sustainability and environmental impact.

Key Points:

  1. Rising Water Demand: In Virginia, home to the world's largest concentration of data centers, water usage jumped by almost two-thirds between 2019 and 2023, from 1.13 billion gallons to 1.85 billion gallons.

  2. Global Impact: This trend is not limited to Virginia but is playing out worldwide, with major tech companies reporting substantial water usage in water-stressed areas:

    • Microsoft: 42% of its water consumption in 2023 came from "areas with water stress."

    • Google: 15% of its freshwater withdrawals came from areas with "high water scarcity."

  3. Cooling and Humidity Control: Data centers use water primarily for two purposes:

    • Cooling computing equipment

    • Maintaining proper humidity levels to prevent static electricity, which can damage computers

  4. Recycling Challenges: While many data centers recycle water in closed-loop systems, a significant portion is lost to evaporation for humidity control, especially in drier regions.

  5. Industry Concerns: Many experts are labeling this trend as unsustainable, given the increasing demand for AI and the corresponding growth in data center infrastructure.

Implications:

  • The AI boom is creating a significant environmental challenge, particularly in regions already facing water scarcity.

  • Tech companies may need to invest in more efficient cooling technologies and explore alternative solutions to reduce water consumption.

  • This issue highlights the complex relationship between technological advancement and environmental sustainability, emphasizing the need for responsible innovation in the AI sector.

As the demand for AI continues to grow, finding a balance between technological progress and environmental stewardship will be crucial for the industry's long-term sustainability.
