OpenAI is funding research into ‘AI morality’
OpenAI's nonprofit arm is funding academic research at Duke University to develop algorithms capable of predicting human moral judgments, investing $1 million over three years to explore the intersection of AI and ethics.
Research Scope and Challenges
The project, led by practical ethics professor Walter Sinnott-Armstrong and Jana Borg, aims to train algorithms for predicting human moral judgments in medical, legal, and business scenarios. The researchers have previously developed morally-aligned algorithms for kidney donation decisions and studied public preferences regarding AI involvement in moral decision-making.
However, current AI technology faces significant limitations in understanding moral concepts. Modern machine learning models, operating as statistical pattern recognizers, lack true comprehension of ethical principles and the complex reasoning behind moral decisions. Their training data, predominantly sourced from Western perspectives, often results in biased moral frameworks that may not reflect diverse global values.
Technical and Philosophical Hurdles
The fundamental challenge lies in AI's inability to grasp the nuanced nature of morality. Previous attempts at ethical AI systems, like the Allen Institute's Ask Delphi, demonstrated significant limitations. While capable of basic moral judgments, these systems proved vulnerable to manipulation through simple rephrasing and often produced problematic or biased responses.
The inherent subjectivity of morality presents additional complications. Different AI models already show varying ethical leanings – Claude exhibits Kantian tendencies focusing on absolute moral rules, while ChatGPT shows utilitarian preferences prioritizing maximum benefit. This divergence reflects the ongoing philosophical debates about ethical frameworks that have persisted for millennia.
The project faces the complex task of developing algorithms that can navigate these philosophical differences while accounting for diverse cultural perspectives and avoiding the perpetuation of existing biases. Success would require not just technical innovation but also careful consideration of how to represent and balance different moral frameworks.
This initiative marks a significant step in AI ethics research, though the feasibility of creating truly moral AI remains uncertain. The outcomes could influence future approaches to AI development and ethical decision-making, while raising important questions about the role of artificial intelligence in moral judgments.
As AI systems become more integrated into decision-making processes, the need to understand and potentially predict human moral judgments grows more crucial. OpenAI's investment in this research reflects the increasing importance of addressing ethical considerations in AI development.
Anthropic raises another $4B from Amazon, makes AWS its ‘primary’ training partner
Amazon is investing an additional $4 billion in Anthropic, bringing its total investment to $8 billion. As part of the deal, Anthropic will primarily train its AI models on AWS and collaborate with Amazon's Annapurna Labs to develop Trainium chips. Amazon customers will get early access to fine-tune new Claude models. The investment comes as Anthropic projects $2.7 billion in expenses for 2024 and faces regulatory scrutiny from FTC and UK authorities over big tech AI partnerships.
LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman warns against Elon Musk’s ‘conflict of interest’ in setting AI policies
LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman warns that Elon Musk's appointment to head the Department of Government Efficiency under Trump creates potential conflicts of interest, particularly regarding his ownership of xAI. Hoffman argues Musk could unfairly favor xAI through government contracts or regulations targeting competitors. He also expresses broader concerns about Trump's potential favoritism in tech and crypto policy, while acknowledging possible benefits of reduced crypto regulation. Despite criticism, Hoffman maintains hope for positive impacts on U.S. entrepreneurship and innovation under Trump's administration.

Pickle's AI Avatars Let You Skip Video Calls While Looking Present
A new startup called Pickle is offering an AI solution for those tired of endless video conferences - a digital clone that can attend meetings in your place. The service creates a realistic avatar from a five-minute training video, allowing users to appear present in virtual meetings while being elsewhere.
The LA-based startup, backed by Krew Capital, offers three subscription tiers ranging from $300 to $1,150 annually. The technology currently works with major platforms including Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams, though only on MacOS, with Windows support promised next month.
While the concept promises freedom from tedious meetings - letting users appear to be in their office while actually being anywhere else - early demos suggest the technology still has noticeable imperfections. High demand has already led to delays in clone generation.
The implications of such technology extend beyond mere convenience, raising questions about workplace authenticity and the future of remote collaboration. As AI avatars become more sophisticated, they may fundamentally change how we think about presence and participation in virtual meetings.
