Barto, professor emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Sutton, professor at the University of Alberta, developed fundamental algorithms and theoretical frameworks that have shaped reinforcement learning since the 1980s. Their pioneering work on temporal difference learning—a method that allows systems to learn from sequential experiences without waiting for final outcomes—has become a cornerstone of modern AI development.

The duo's influence extends beyond individual algorithms. Their 1998 textbook, "Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction," has become the definitive resource in the field, helping educate generations of computer scientists and AI researchers. Now in its second edition, the text continues to serve as both an introduction for newcomers and a reference for experienced practitioners.

Reinforcement learning's distinctive approach—in which AI agents learn optimal behaviors through trial-and-error interactions with their environment—has proven remarkably versatile. Unlike supervised learning, which requires extensive labeled data, reinforcement learning allows systems to develop sophisticated strategies through exploration and feedback. This approach mirrors how humans and animals naturally learn many complex tasks, creating AI systems that can adapt to changing conditions and novel challenges.

The field gained mainstream attention in 2016 when Google DeepMind's AlphaGo defeated world champion Lee Sedol at the ancient board game Go—a feat many experts had predicted was decades away. Last year, Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield received the Nobel Prize in Physics for their contributions to neural networks and machine learning. This was shortly followed by DeepMind's Demis Hassabis and John Jumper winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on AlphaFold, a protein-folding AI system with significant implications for biological research.

Barto and Sutton join an illustrious group of AI pioneers who have received the Turing Award, including Yann LeCun, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yoshua Bengio, who were recognized in 2018 for their work on deep neural networks. The $1 million prize, supported by Google, will be shared between the two researchers.

Google has introduced a new AI image feature called "Vision Match" to its Shopping tab, allowing users to find clothing items based on written descriptions of their fashion ideas. The feature, announced Wednesday, is now available in the mobile search experience for users in the United States.

Vision Match enables shoppers to describe garments they're imagining, after which the AI suggests ideas based on the description and presents the best available matches that can be purchased. Users can access this feature by typing an idea into the search bar and scrolling to the "Can't find it? Create it" prompt, or by navigating to the left panel in the Shopping tab and selecting "Create & Shop."

The tool has been in development since 2023, when it was initially available to testers as an experimental feature in Google Labs before its public release.

Alongside Vision Match, Google is expanding its augmented reality (AR) beauty features. US users can now try on multiple makeup products simultaneously, including lipsticks, mascaras, eyeshadows, and eyeliners from brands such as E.L.F., Fenty, and Glossier. To use this capability, mobile users can search for terms like "soft glam," select "See the looks on you" followed by "Try it on," and then virtually apply different makeup combinations.

Google is also enhancing its virtual try-on experience for clothing, which was first introduced in 2023. The updated version allows shoppers to visualize pants and skirts from hundreds of brands on real-life models in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL, providing a more inclusive shopping experience.

These developments build on Google's ongoing integration of generative AI into its Search and Shopping functions. Since introducing generative AI to Search in 2023, Google has progressively enhanced its Shopping tab with the technology. Previous additions include AI summaries on search results pages that provide key information when looking up products, such as essential tips to consider before purchasing seasonal items like winter jackets.
