Google, Nvidia invest in OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever’s AI startup Safe Superintelligence

SSI Ilya Sutskever

Safe Superintelligence reaches $32B valuation less than a year after launch

Alphabet and Nvidia have joined Greenoaks, Lightspeed, and Andreessen Horowitz to back Ilya Sutskever’s stealth-mode AI startup, SSI, now valued at $32 billion. Founded in mid-2023, SSI is developing reasoning-first models to pursue safe superintelligence.

While the company remains quiet on its roadmap, it’s reportedly favoring Google’s TPUs over Nvidia’s GPUs—a sign of shifting alliances in the AI infrastructure space. SSI's dual HQs in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv position it at key global innovation hubs.

The investment aligns with an industry-wide push for vertical integration and model-control. With heavyweights like OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI absorbing cloud and chip investments, SSI emerges as the next key player in the superintelligence race.

Led by former OpenAI and Apple AI researchers, SSI's mission on safety-first superintelligence could reshape the direction of AI development—if it delivers on its promise to align intelligence with security from day one.

⚡ The companies of the future

AI tool effectively measures MS disease activity from 1 MRI scan

MindGlide AI MS Detection

MindGlide AI MS Detection

A new AI tool called MindGlide can accurately assess multiple aspects of MS-related brain damage from a single MRI scan, even when using routine scans not typically used for such monitoring.

Developed by researchers at University College London, MindGlide can identify lesions without requiring patients to undergo multiple scans, making the process more convenient and potentially less costly for clinical trials. The tool was developed using over 4,000 MRI scans from nearly 3,000 MS patients and tested on nearly 15,000 scans from 1,000 patients.

Testing showed MindGlide outperformed other advanced tools at identifying MS lesions and was effective at determining treatment effects in clinical trials, including analyzing the impact of Ocrevus on primary progressive MS and simvastatin on secondary progressive MS. The researchers note that a current limitation is that the tool only works on brain scans, not spinal cord images, which also contribute to MS disability.

Why it matters: This breakthrough could streamline MS diagnostics and drug testing, lowering patient burden while improving monitoring precision for a complex neurodegenerative disease.

⚡ Bring Still Images to Life with AI Animation

DreamActor-M1

DreamActor-M1 is an AI animation tool that transforms photos or short clips of people into stunning, lifelike animations. It captures natural facial expressions, head turns, and body motions using advanced diffusion transformer technology—all from a single image.

Perfect for content creators, educators, filmmakers, and marketers, DreamActor makes high-quality animation accessible without costly equipment or deep technical skills.

IEA: AI to Reshape Global Energy Systems and Double Data Center Electricity Use by 2030

IEA Energy and AI Report

AI is rapidly becoming both a challenge and a catalyst for the global energy sector

The details:

A groundbreaking new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) reveals that artificial intelligence is poised to fundamentally reshape the energy landscape over the coming decade. The special report "Energy and AI" provides comprehensive analysis on the growing intersection between energy systems and artificial intelligence technologies.

According to the report, global electricity demand from data centers is projected to more than double by 2030, reaching approximately 945 terawatt-hours—equivalent to Japan's entire current electricity consumption. AI will be the primary driver of this surge, with AI-optimized data centers expected to quadruple their electricity usage within the same timeframe.

In the United States, data centers are on track to account for nearly half of all electricity demand growth through 2030. The American economy is projected to consume more electricity for data processing than for all energy-intensive manufacturing combined, including aluminum, steel, cement, and chemicals production. Across advanced economies, data centers will likely drive over 20% of electricity demand growth, revitalizing power sectors that have experienced stagnant demand in recent years.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol emphasized that while renewables and natural gas are expected to be the primary energy sources meeting data centers' growing needs, significant uncertainties remain regarding AI adoption rates, efficiency improvements, and potential energy sector bottlenecks.

The report also highlights AI's complex relationship with energy security. While AI-powered cyberattacks on energy utilities have tripled in the past four years, AI simultaneously offers enhanced defensive capabilities against such threats. Additionally, the report provides first-of-its-kind estimates on critical mineral demand from data centers, raising concerns about supply concentration.

Despite driving increased electricity consumption, the report suggests that emissions impacts could potentially be offset if AI enables widespread efficiency improvements across the energy sector. Furthermore, AI could accelerate scientific breakthroughs in energy technologies like batteries and solar PV.

What makes this crucial: As AI transforms energy demand, countries must expand grid infrastructure and foster collaboration between tech and energy sectors—or risk falling behind in the race toward a sustainable AI-powered future.
