ChatGPT Adds Shopping: OpenAI Challenges Google in Product Search

OpenAI expands ChatGPT with product recommendations and buy buttons
OpenAI is bringing e-commerce to ChatGPT. The new feature lets users receive personalized shopping recommendations from the chatbot, complete with buy buttons that redirect to retailers’ websites—directly challenging Google’s dominance in product search.
While users don’t check out inside ChatGPT, the tool curates product suggestions through conversational inputs, memory of past preferences, and web data. Think of it as a research assistant that knows your taste in espresso machines or black outfits—without needing you to keyword spam a search engine.
No Ads. No Sponsored Links.
Unlike Google Shopping, ChatGPT’s picks aren’t paid placements. “They are not ads,” OpenAI's Adam Fry confirmed. Instead, it pulls from trusted web sources like WIRED, Reddit, and expert reviews—letting users even prioritize which types of content they want it to emphasize.
Affiliate Revenue and Industry Shakeups
With over a billion web searches weekly via ChatGPT, many tied to shopping, the feature opens a new front in the affiliate commerce race. Publishers wonder how affiliate models—like links in WIRED reviews—will translate when AI intermediates the click. For now, OpenAI says it's “experimenting” with approaches.
Bigger Picture: AI Meets Shopping
ChatGPT joins competitors like Perplexity (“Buy with Pro”) and Google’s AI-enhanced “Researched with AI” shopping features. It’s all part of a larger shift: AI assistants as shopping guides. For OpenAI, this expands a long-term vision to blend utility with monetization, including possible future affiliate revenue and in-chat commerce.
Whether users view this as helpful or manipulative will shape its adoption. One user summed it up: “AI, potentially one of the greatest tech advancements this century—wielded to sell us more crap.”

Apple and Anthropic reportedly partner to build an AI coding platform

Apple and Anthropic AI Coding Partnership
Apple and Anthropic are reportedly collaborating to develop a "vibe-coding" software platform that will use generative AI to write, edit, and test code for programmers, according to Bloomberg.
The system is said to be a new version of Apple's Xcode programming software powered by Anthropic's Claude Sonnet model. Apple plans to deploy the tool internally, though no decision has been made about a public release.
This partnership appears to be part of Apple's broader strategy to accelerate its AI capabilities through external collaborations, which already includes OpenAI's ChatGPT integration for Apple Intelligence features and potential future integration with Google's Gemini.
Claude models have become increasingly popular among developers for coding tasks, particularly on platforms like Cursor and Windsurf.
Why it matters: If released publicly, Apple’s AI-powered dev tool could reshape how developers build apps across its ecosystem—ushering in a new era of human-AI code collaboration.
⚡ Enterprise-Grade AI Agents for Customer Conversations

Regal AI is an enterprise-grade platform that transforms customer communications across voice, messaging, and digital channels. It deploys AI agents to handle tasks like routing, scheduling, lead qualification, and FAQs, while integrating with CRMs to offer a unified view of the customer.
Industries like healthcare, insurance, education, and home services choose Regal AI to cut costs, scale efficiently, and still deliver personalized service.

Airbnb Expands AI Customer Support to Half of U.S. Users

Airbnb has begun deploying an AI-powered customer service bot across its US operations, CEO Brian Chesky revealed during the company's first-quarter earnings call on Thursday. The rollout, which started last month, has already reached 50% of American users, with plans to extend the feature to all US customers by the end of May.
Early results appear promising, with Chesky noting that the AI implementation is enhancing the customer experience while reducing operational demands. "It has already led to a 15% reduction in people needing to contact live human agents," he reported during the analyst call.
This move represents a significant expansion of Airbnb's AI efforts. The company confirmed to TechCrunch last year that it was testing the technology, but only in a limited capacity for specific queries. At that time, co-founder Nathan Blecharczyk expressed optimism about AI's potential impact on the consumer experience.
Unlike many tech companies that are aggressively pursuing AI agents capable of performing complex tasks, Airbnb is taking a more measured approach. Chesky indicated in February that the company would prioritize implementing AI for customer service before exploring other applications such as travel planning or booking. This cautious strategy stems from his belief that AI technology is still in its early developmental stages.
This approach contrasts with Airbnb's competitors like Expedia and Booking.com, which are investing heavily in AI-powered features including itinerary building, trip planning, and real-time travel updates.
The AI rollout comes as Airbnb reported first-quarter total revenue of $2.27 billion, representing a 6% increase from the previous year. However, the company's forecast for current-quarter revenue fell slightly below analysts' expectations, with indications that travel demand may slow due to global tariff wars affecting consumer sentiment and discretionary spending.
