OpenAI's Viral Image Generator Now Available via API for Developers

OpenAI opens up its powerful image generation tool to developers via API
OpenAI has officially extended its viral image generation technology to developers, announcing on Wednesday that the same system powering ChatGPT's popular image creation feature is now available through its API. This move enables developers to integrate the technology into their own applications and services, potentially revolutionizing how visual content is created across the digital landscape.
The Viral Phenomenon Behind the API
The new image generator, which launched for most ChatGPT users in late March, quickly became an internet sensation for its remarkable ability to create photorealistic images in various styles, including Ghibli-inspired visuals and AI action figures. OpenAI reports over 700 million images were generated by 130 million users in the first week alone.
While this surge helped drive massive adoption, it also taxed OpenAI’s infrastructure—making this API launch a clear sign the company has scaled to meet demand.
Technical Capabilities of "gpt-image-1"
The API is powered by “gpt-image-1,” a natively multimodal model capable of generating images and interpreting text in the same workflow. Developers can:
- Create images in diverse styles
- Follow precise visual instructions
- Render context-aware scenes
- Accurately place readable text in images
Safety Guardrails and Content Moderation
OpenAI has built in robust safety filters, including "Auto" and "Low" moderation settings. All images carry C2PA metadata to ensure AI-generated content is clearly marked. This addresses concerns about authenticity and synthetic media misuse.
Pricing Structure
The token-based pricing model includes:
- $5 per million input tokens (text)
- $10 per million input tokens (images)
- $40 per million output tokens (images)
- 2¢ for low-quality images
- 7¢ for medium quality
- 19¢ for high quality
Early Adoption and Use Cases
OpenAI says Adobe, Airtable, Canva, Wix, Instacart, GoDaddy, and Figma are already using or testing the tool. For example:
- Figma is adding image generation directly into its design workflow
- Instacart is generating food visuals for recipes and shopping suggestions
Industry Impact
This API launch marks a major shift toward accessible AI-powered creativity. Developers, regardless of company size, now have tools once reserved for advanced AI labs. It opens doors to new apps and services with visuals powered entirely by AI—and it increases pressure on rivals like Midjourney, Stability AI, and Google.
⚡ The companies of the future
President Trump signs executive order boosting AI in K-12 schools
Trump AI Education Executive Order
President Trump signed an executive order on April 23 aimed at incorporating artificial intelligence into K-12 education to prepare the U.S. workforce for advancing technology.
The directive instructs the Education and Labor Departments to create opportunities for high school students to take AI courses and certification programs, while prioritizing AI in discretionary grant programs for teacher training.
It also establishes a White House Task Force on AI Education, chaired by Michael Kratsios, to develop a "Presidential AI Challenge" and create public-private partnerships for AI education resources.
The order was one of seven education-related directives signed that day, with others targeting university accreditation, foreign gift disclosure, and support for HBCUs. While both parties agree on the importance of AI in education, they differ on the federal government's role in implementation.
Why it matters: The move signals a national push to equip students for the AI-driven economy—but also raises questions about centralization and curriculum standards.
⚡ Automate Phone Conversations with an AI Voice Agent

Fireflies Launches 200 AI Mini Apps to Instantly Analyze Meeting Transcripts

Fireflies AI meeting assistant
The details:
Fireflies.ai, the Khosla Ventures-backed AI-powered note-taking application, has released a suite of domain-specific "mini apps" designed to automatically extract insights from meeting transcripts. The company announced this expansion on Wednesday as part of its strategy to enhance productivity for various business functions.
Amid the growing market for meeting intelligence tools powered by automatic speech recognition and generative AI, Fireflies has achieved impressive growth. According to co-founder and CEO Krish Ramineni, the startup has seen an eightfold increase in users and has reached profitability.
The company is now launching over 200 mini apps within its platform, targeting specific roles and use cases across sales, marketing, recruiting, operations, management, and customer service departments. These specialized tools include the BANT Sales App, which extracts details like budget and timelines for sales teams; the Agent Performance Feedback Generator, which evaluates customer service representatives' performance and provides coaching suggestions; and the Product Launch Planning App, which helps formulate product launch strategies.
Unlike general AI tools that require manual prompting to analyze meeting transcripts, Fireflies' mini apps aim to streamline the process by automatically generating relevant insights. "The amount of time it takes to get insights from a conversation after a meeting is a lot," Ramineni told TechCrunch. "We want to close that gap with these apps. With these apps, Fireflies can kick these actions off right after the meeting and make people more productive."
Users can direct the output from these mini apps to other platforms through integrations with popular business tools including Salesforce, HubSpot, Asana, Jira, BambooHR, Greenhouse, Slack, and Microsoft Teams. For example, a meeting host can automatically share a meeting summary with their manager via Slack once the session concludes.
Fireflies offers flexibility in how these apps are deployed, allowing users to apply them on a per-meeting basis or create custom apps for more specialized outputs. The company plans to enable sharing of these custom apps within user groups in the future.
Beyond these mini apps, Fireflies is working on enhancing meeting knowledge through "meeting briefs" that provide information about participants and organizations. The company is also testing technology that would create "digital twins" of users capable of responding to basic queries during meetings, similar to features being tested by platforms like Zoom.
