OpenAI unveils GPT-4.5 ‘Orion,’ its largest AI model yet

OpenAI unveils GPT-4.5 ‘Orion,’ its largest AI model yet
OpenAI has officially launched GPT-4.5, codenamed "Orion," representing the company's largest AI model to date. Developed using unprecedented amounts of computing power and training data, the release marks a significant milestone in OpenAI's development trajectory while simultaneously highlighting emerging limitations in traditional AI scaling approaches.
The deployment begins with immediate access for ChatGPT Pro subscribers ($200/month) and paid API users, with a broader rollout to ChatGPT Plus and Team customers expected next week. This phased approach reflects both the computational demands of running the model and OpenAI's desire to gather research insights through controlled deployment.
In a notable shift from pre-release expectations, OpenAI initially stated in its technical paper that GPT-4.5 "is not a frontier AI model," though this statement was subsequently removed from the documentation hours after release. This adjustment suggests internal debates about how to position the model amidst growing competition from specialized reasoning-focused alternatives.
The development of GPT-4.5 followed OpenAI's established scaling paradigm—dramatically increasing computing resources and training data during the unsupervised pre-training phase. While previous iterations saw substantial performance gains through this approach, GPT-4.5's mixed benchmark results indicate diminishing returns from scaling alone.
"We're sharing GPT-4.5 as a research preview to better understand its strengths and limitations," OpenAI explained in their announcement. "We're still exploring what it's capable of and are eager to see how people use it in ways we might not have expected."
Performance testing reveals GPT-4.5's complex positioning in the AI landscape. On OpenAI's SimpleQA benchmark for factual accuracy, GPT-4.5 outperforms the company's GPT-4o and reasoning models like o1 and o3-mini. However, when evaluated against specialized reasoning models on sophisticated tasks like mathematical problem-solving (AIME) and scientific knowledge (GPQA), GPT-4.5 falls short of performance leaders like DeepSeek's R1, Anthropic's Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and OpenAI's own reasoning-focused models.
The computational requirements of GPT-4.5 are substantial, reflected in its API pricing structure. OpenAI is charging $75 per million input tokens and $150 per million output tokens—dramatically higher than GPT-4o's rates of $2.50 and $10 respectively. These costs raise questions about the model's long-term viability, with OpenAI acknowledging it's "evaluating whether to continue serving GPT-4.5 in its API in the long term."
Despite benchmark limitations, OpenAI emphasizes qualitative strengths that formal evaluations may not capture. The company highlights GPT-4.5's "deeper world knowledge" and "higher emotional intelligence," demonstrated through comparative tests showing more socially appropriate responses to emotional prompts and superior creative capabilities when generating content like SVG graphics.
OpenAI appears to be positioning GPT-4.5 as a transitional model in its product evolution. The company has indicated plans to eventually combine its GPT series with its "o" reasoning series, beginning with GPT-5 later this year. This hybrid approach may address the limitations revealed by GPT-4.5's performance while leveraging its scale-driven strengths.
Industry observers view GPT-4.5 as a bellwether for traditional AI development approaches. Its mixed results suggest that while scaling continues to deliver improvements in some domains (particularly creative tasks and conversational abilities), more specialized architectures may be needed for advanced reasoning capabilities.
As the AI community evaluates GPT-4.5's capabilities in real-world applications, the model's legacy may ultimately be not just its own capabilities, but what it reveals about the future direction of AI development. Rather than representing the culmination of OpenAI's scaling approach, GPT-4.5 appears to mark a transition point toward hybrid architectures that combine the benefits of scale with specialized reasoning capabilities.

Meta’s new AR glasses for research can measure heart rate

Meta AR Glasses Aria Gen 2
Meta has unveiled Aria Gen 2, their next-generation augmented reality glasses for research, five years after the original Project Aria device. The upgraded 75-gram glasses include new capabilities like a PPG sensor for heart rate monitoring and a contact microphone that can distinguish between the wearer's voice and bystanders.
Featuring Meta's custom silicon, the glasses can perform AI tasks such as eye tracking, hand tracking, and speech recognition, with open-ear "force-canceling" speakers and an eight-hour battery life. Meta plans to make them available to academic and commercial research labs soon, with Envision already testing them to develop solutions for the visually impaired.
Why it matters: With advanced AI-powered sensors and accessibility-focused features, Meta’s AR glasses push the boundaries of wearable tech, showing how augmented reality can evolve beyond entertainment into research and health applications.

Quora Launches App Creator Tool Within Poe AI Platform

Quora Poe App Creator
The details:
Quora has expanded the capabilities of its Poe AI platform with a new feature that allows users to build and share custom AI-powered applications. The tool, called Poe Apps, enables users to create visual interfaces on top of various AI models by simply describing the app they want to develop.
The App Creator tool translates natural language descriptions into functional code, generating both the app interface and custom logic in JavaScript. Users can specify particular AI models they want to incorporate, such as OpenAI's o3-mini or Google's video-generating Veo 2, or provide more general specifications. The system is powered by Anthropic's recently released Claude 3.7 Sonnet model.
Applications created through the platform can operate alongside Poe's chatbot window or function as standalone visual tools. Quora has showcased example applications, including one that transforms photos into 3D anime-style art using OpenAI's GPT-4o and Black Forest Labs' Flux-Pro-1.1, and another that removes unwanted objects from images using Bria's Bria Eraser model.
The underlying code for each application is accessible to users, allowing for manual adjustments and fine-tuning. This provides flexibility for users with programming knowledge to customize their creations beyond the AI-generated code.
Users can share their custom apps with other Poe users, though initially only on the web platform. Quora has indicated that iOS and Android support will be added in the future. Each time an app utilizes an AI model, it consumes points from the user's Poe account. Free users receive a daily allocation of points, while subscribers to Poe's $5 monthly premium tier get access to more substantial point packages.
Quora has hinted at future monetization opportunities for app creators. "This is an early launch and we have a long roadmap ahead to give creators even more power, including the ability to earn money directly from their apps," the company stated in a blog post. The company is offering App Creator at a reduced early-access price for a limited time.
What makes this crucial: Poe Apps builds upon Quora's earlier web apps feature launched in July last year. The tool is comparable to Anthropic's Artifacts and OpenAI's ChatGPT Canvas, which provide dedicated workspaces for editing and enhancing AI-generated content. While these applications have certain limitations, they demonstrate the significant advancements in AI models' programming capabilities.
