According to Sesame's description on the AI development platform Hugging Face, CSM-1B generates "RVQ audio codes" from text and audio inputs. RVQ, or residual vector quantization, is a technique for encoding audio into discrete tokens that has been employed in several recent AI audio technologies, including Google's SoundStream and Meta's Encodec.
The model's architecture combines a backbone from Meta's Llama family with an audio decoder component. Sesame indicates that a fine-tuned variant of CSM powers their Maya assistant, which went viral in late February for its remarkably human-like speech patterns, including natural breathing, verbal hesitations, and the ability to be interrupted mid-sentence—features similar to those found in OpenAI's Voice Mode.
Notably, CSM-1B comes with minimal safeguards. Rather than implementing technical restrictions, Sesame relies on an honor system, simply requesting that developers and users refrain from mimicking voices without consent, creating misleading content, or engaging in harmful activities. This approach stands in contrast to recent warnings from Consumer Reports, which noted that many popular AI voice cloning tools lack "meaningful" protections against potential fraud or abuse.
Testing of the Hugging Face demo revealed how quickly the model can clone a voice—less than a minute—and its ability to generate speech on controversial topics such as elections and propaganda, highlighting potential misuse concerns.
