Google's X "moonshot factory" has announced its latest graduate, Heritable Agriculture, a startup using machine learning and data analysis to improve crop production. The company aims to address agriculture's substantial environmental impact, including its role in generating 25% of anthropogenic greenhouse emissions and its position as the planet's largest consumer of groundwater.

Founded by Brad Zamft, a physics PhD and former Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation program officer, Heritable Agriculture emerged from his work at Google X, which began in late 2018. "I was given broad purview to work on whatever I wanted, as long as it could scale to a Google-size business," Zamft said. "The idea of how do we get better at optimizing plants stuck with me and it gained traction with the leadership."

The startup's approach leverages artificial intelligence to analyze plant genomes and identify combinations that could enhance crop yields. The company has tested its models on thousands of plants within a specialized growth chamber at X's Bay Area headquarters, complemented by field work across California, Nebraska, and Wisconsin.

While the agricultural industry is over 12,000 years old, Heritable aims to modernize it through data-driven insights. The company's technology analyzes massive datasets to provide actionable instructions for growers, focusing on developing climate-friendly traits for increased yields, reduced water requirements, and improved carbon storage capacity in roots and soil.

Notably, the company is currently focused on conventional breeding methods rather than genetic modification. "We're not developing gene-edited plants, and genetic modification is not on our roadmap," Zamft explained. "Gene editing may eventually come, but we're seeing a huge, unmet need for identifying what to breed and then doing better breeding — crossing a mother and father plant, not using the biotechnology to actually develop the crop."

The startup has secured seed funding from FTW Ventures, Mythos Ventures, and SVG Ventures, with Google maintaining an undisclosed equity stake. The spinout comes as X, under the leadership of Astro Teller, has begun more aggressively launching independent companies, following layoffs at the corporate incubator last January as part of broader Google-wide cuts.
