Trump Coal Executive Order

President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order aimed at boosting the coal industry by designating coal as a critical mineral and requiring some coal-fired power plants scheduled for closure to continue operating.

The administration is framing this directive as necessary to meet surging electricity demand from data centers. While the order might delay some closures, it's unlikely to reverse coal's steady decline in the U.S. power sector, which has fallen from 51% of electricity generation in 2001 to about 15% today.

This decline has been driven primarily by low-cost natural gas and increasingly competitive renewable energy sources rather than regulations. Coal remains the most environmentally harmful electricity source, releasing more carbon dioxide than other fossil fuels along with numerous pollutants linked to health problems.

Why it matters: This move illustrates the mounting energy demands of AI and cloud infrastructure—and the controversial tradeoffs policymakers are considering to keep the grid powered.

Waymo to Use In-Car Camera Data for AI Training—With Opt-Out Option for Riders

The details:

Waymo is preparing to use data from its robotaxis, including interior camera footage linked to rider identities, to train generative AI models. This development, discovered in an unreleased version of the company's privacy policy by researcher Jane Manchun Wong, raises new questions about how passenger behavior within autonomous vehicles might be repurposed for AI training.

The draft language also reveals that Waymo may share rider data for ad personalization, though this aligns with the company's existing privacy policy that already permits collecting personal data to improve services and for advertising purposes.

What will change is that riders will soon have the option to "opt out" of having their personal information sold, shared, or used for AI training. According to the unreleased privacy page, users will be able to "opt out of Waymo, or its affiliates, using your personal information (including interior camera data associated with your identity) for training generative AI."

Waymo spokesperson Julia Ilina told TechCrunch that this feature remains under development and "will not introduce any changes to Waymo's Privacy Policy, but rather will offer riders an opportunity to opt out of data collection for machine learning training purposes." Ilina confirmed that Waymo uses personal data for various purposes including safety, vehicle cleanliness verification, locating lost items, emergency assistance, rule compliance monitoring, and service improvement.

"Any data Waymo collects will adhere to the Waymo One Privacy Policy," Ilina added, noting that the company will not share personal information with other Alphabet companies except with user consent, for service provision, or as described in the privacy policy. When asked about notification plans for the opt-out feature, Ilina said deployment details haven't been finalized.

This development comes as Waymo experiences significant growth, currently providing over 200,000 paid robotaxi rides weekly across Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Austin—up from just 10,000 weekly rides two years ago. The company plans to expand to Atlanta, Miami, and Washington, D.C. within the next two years.
