Apple transforms Siri into ChatGPT-like chatbot for iOS 27

Apple plans to make Siri an AI chatbot, report says

Apple is reportedly planning a major overhaul of Siri that would transform the virtual assistant into a sophisticated AI chatbot similar to ChatGPT, marking a significant strategic shift for the tech giant's approach to artificial intelligence.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple's revamped Siri will be integrated into iOS 27 and could serve as the centerpiece of the company's WWDC presentation scheduled for June. The project, internally known by the codename "Campos," represents a departure from Apple's previous vision for its AI assistant.

The new Siri chatbot is designed to handle both voice and text inputs, offering users more flexible ways to interact with Apple's AI technology. This represents a notable change in direction from earlier statements by Apple senior vice president Craig Federighi, who had previously expressed his preference for keeping Siri away from the chatbot format. Federighi had advocated for Apple's AI capabilities to be "integrated so it's there within reach whenever you need it" rather than functioning as a standalone chatbot experience.

This strategic pivot appears to be driven by mounting competitive pressure from the success of rival AI chatbots in the market. Companies like OpenAI with ChatGPT and Anthropic with Claude have demonstrated the consumer appeal and practical utility of conversational AI interfaces, forcing Apple to reconsider its approach to AI interaction design.

Adding to Apple's concerns is OpenAI's announced intention to expand into the hardware sector. The AI company's hardware ambitions are being led by Jony Ive, Apple's former design chief who was instrumental in creating iconic Apple products including the iPhone and iPad. This development potentially threatens Apple's dominance in the premium consumer electronics space while combining it with cutting-edge AI capabilities.

Apple's position in the artificial intelligence race has been a subject of industry scrutiny, with many observers noting the company's slower pace compared to competitors. The tech giant has faced multiple delays in rolling out what it promised would be a "more personalized Siri," disappointing users who expected more advanced AI capabilities from their devices.

Throughout the past year, Apple actively sought partnerships with leading AI companies to accelerate its artificial intelligence development. The company conducted extensive testing and evaluation of AI technologies from major players including OpenAI and Anthropic, exploring potential collaboration opportunities that could enhance its AI offerings.

After this comprehensive evaluation process, Apple ultimately selected Google's Gemini AI as its primary artificial intelligence partner. The partnership between Apple and Google was officially announced earlier this month, marking a significant collaboration between the two tech giants despite their competitive relationship in various market segments.

The integration of Google's Gemini technology is expected to provide Apple with the advanced AI capabilities needed to make Siri more competitive with existing chatbots. This partnership allows Apple to leverage Google's expertise in large language models and conversational AI while maintaining its focus on user privacy and seamless integration across its ecosystem of devices.

The timing of this Siri transformation aligns with Apple's broader push into artificial intelligence, as the company seeks to catch up with competitors who have already established strong positions in the AI market. The success of this initiative could be crucial for Apple's ability to maintain its premium market position and continue driving innovation in consumer technology.

OpenAI plans first hardware device launch targeting 2026 release

OpenAI is set to announce its first hardware device in late 2025, with reports suggesting AI-powered earbuds codenamed "Sweet Pea." The device will reportedly feature a custom 2-nanometer processor for local AI processing, avoiding cloud dependency.

After acquiring Jony Ive's startup, OpenAI aims for a "peaceful and calm" screen-free device. Manufacturing partnerships with Luxshare or Foxconn are being explored, targeting 40-50 million units in the first year. With ChatGPT's billion weekly users, OpenAI seeks distribution control despite challenges competing with established products like AirPods.

⚡ Trends for the Future

Adobe Acrobat now lets you edit files using prompts, generate podcast summaries

Adobe enhances Acrobat with AI-powered editing, presentations, and podcast features.

Adobe continues its aggressive push into AI-powered productivity tools with significant new features for Acrobat. The latest updates introduce prompt-based file editing, automated podcast summaries, and enhanced presentation creation capabilities that leverage the company's existing Adobe Spaces platform.

The most notable addition is the ability to edit files using natural language prompts. Users can now perform twelve different actions through simple text commands, including removing pages, text, comments, and images, finding and replacing content, and adding e-signatures and passwords. This streamlines document management by eliminating the need to navigate complex menus.

Adobe is also capitalizing on the growing trend of AI-generated audio content by introducing podcast summary features. Similar to Google's NotebookLM and other emerging tools, Acrobat can now convert documents or entire Spaces into podcast-style audio summaries, making content more accessible and digestible for busy professionals.

The presentation creation feature builds on Adobe Spaces, the collaborative platform launched last year. Users can now transform collections of files and notes into polished presentations using text prompts. For example, combining financial data, product plans, and competitor analysis can automatically generate a comprehensive pitch deck. The system first creates an editable outline, then integrates with Adobe Express to add themes, stock photos, and branding elements.

Enhanced sharing capabilities now include AI-generated summaries with precise citations, allowing team members to quickly understand document contents without reading everything in detail. Contributors can comment and modify shared files more efficiently.

Adobe has also introduced customizable AI assistant roles, including "analyst," "entertainer," and "instructor" personas, with options to create custom assistants through prompts. While competing with established players like Canva and emerging startups in the AI presentation space, Adobe's integration across its ecosystem provides a comprehensive solution for document management and content creation.
