AI startup enables employees to cash out equity shares

Decagon completes first tender offer at $4.5B valuation

title image

AI-powered customer support startup Decagon has successfully completed its first tender offer, enabling over 300 employees to sell portions of their vested shares at the company's current $4.5 billion valuation. The transaction marks a significant milestone for the young company, which was founded less than three years ago.

The employee secondary sale was spearheaded by the same investor group that backed Decagon's $250 million Series D funding round just two months prior. This prestigious roster includes Coatue, Index Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Definition Capital, Forerunner Ventures, and Ribbit Capital.

As the battle for AI talent reaches fever pitch, rapidly expanding startups are discovering that offering equity liquidity has become one of the most powerful tools for attracting and retaining top-tier employees. This strategy allows workers to convert some of their ownership stakes into immediate cash, providing financial flexibility while maintaining their connection to the company's future growth.

Decagon isn't alone in this approach. Several other AI companies have recently conducted similar employee tender offers, including voice AI company ElevenLabs, productivity tool Linear, and data platform Clay – with Clay notably running two such offerings within a nine-month timeframe.

The ability to provide employee liquidity is largely driven by investor appetite. Venture capitalists are eager to increase their stakes in fast-growing AI companies, creating a win-win situation where employees can access cash while investors gain additional ownership.

"We had the opportunity to bring together the recent investment demand and growth milestones with rewarding the team's hard work," explained Jesse Zhang, Decagon's CEO and co-founder, in a statement to TechCrunch.

While Decagon hasn't revealed specific revenue numbers since late 2024 – when its annual recurring revenue (ARR) exceeded eight figures – the company's soaring valuation tells the story of remarkable growth. The current $4.5 billion valuation represents a threefold increase from the $1.5 billion figure announced in June, signaling sustained momentum in the competitive AI market.

The startup specializes in building AI "concierge" agents that autonomously handle customer inquiries for large enterprises through multiple channels including chat, email, and voice interactions. This technology serves more than 100 major clients, including household names like Avis Budget Group, 1-800-Flowers, fashion retailer Quince, health tech company Oura Health, and travel brand Away.

Decagon operates in an increasingly crowded field, competing with established players like Sierra, Intercom, and Parloa, all racing to automate tasks traditionally performed by human customer service representatives. However, the market opportunity remains vast and largely untapped.

According to research firm Gartner, approximately 17 million contact center agents work worldwide, representing an enormous global workforce that AI companies are now targeting for automation. This massive addressable market explains why investors continue to pour capital into companies like Decagon that demonstrate strong growth metrics and technological capabilities.

The successful completion of this tender offer positions Decagon as a standout player in the AI customer service space, providing both financial rewards for its workforce and validation of its business model. As the company continues scaling its operations and expanding its client base, this liquidity event may serve as a blueprint for other AI startups navigating similar growth trajectories.

Apple Music introduces new metadata tags for AI-generated content

Apple Music to add Transparency Tags to distinguish AI music, says report

title image

Apple Music is implementing new transparency features for AI-generated content. According to Music Business Worldwide, the platform will allow record labels and distributors to flag AI-generated or AI-assisted music through new metadata tags.

These tags will distinguish between AI involvement in artwork, music tracks, lyrics composition, or music videos. However, the system relies on voluntary disclosure from distributors, similar to Spotify's approach. While other platforms like Deezer use automated AI-detection tools, creating accurate detection systems remains challenging. Apple has not yet provided official confirmation of these changes.

The US military is still using Claude β€” but defense-tech clients are fleeing

Military continues using Anthropic while defense contractors abandon Claude systems.

Anthropic finds itself in an unprecedented position following its dispute with the Department of Defense. While President Trump has directed civilian agencies to stop using Anthropic products, the company was granted six months to wind down its Pentagon operations. However, the timeline was complicated when the U.S. and Israel launched a surprise attack on Tehran the day after Trump's directive.

The overlapping restrictions have created a confusing situation where Anthropic's Claude models remain actively deployed in the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict. As American forces continue aerial strikes, Claude is being used for critical targeting decisions despite the political tensions surrounding the company.

According to a Washington Post investigation, Anthropic's systems work alongside Palantir's Maven platform to support Pentagon strike planning. The AI systems have "suggested hundreds of targets, issued precise location coordinates, and prioritized those targets according to importance," functioning as real-time targeting and prioritization tools during active combat operations.

Meanwhile, the defense industry is rapidly moving away from Anthropic. Reuters reports that Lockheed Martin and other major contractors began replacing Claude models this week. The exodus extends beyond prime contractors to smaller players in the defense ecosystem.

A managing partner at J2 Ventures revealed to CNBC that ten portfolio companies "have backed off of their use of Claude for defense use cases and are in active processes to replace the service with another one." This mass migration reflects the industry's uncertainty about Anthropic's future role in military applications.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has promised to designate Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, which would create legal barriers to using the company's products. However, no official steps have been taken, leaving the current military usage technically permissible while creating long-term uncertainty for one of the leading AI labs in the defense technology space.
