Hey,
Last email I asked if you knew your runway. Today: why most businesses don't.
The standard answer is "hire help." Here's what that costs:
A fractional CFO runs $3,000–$8,000 per month. A good financial consultant charges around $300 an hour. An accountant? They handle taxes and compliance — most of them never tell you whether your business is actually healthy.
And what does the expensive option do for that money? In most small businesses, the core of it is this: they track profit and margin monthly, watch cash and runway, check whether revenue covers your real cost base, and translate it all into plain language — "you're fine," "slow down hiring," "you have a tax problem coming."
That's it. That's the monthly heartbeat. Not magic — methodology.
I know because the person I've been working with on this spent years inside PwC doing valuations, M&A, and financing deals. The way professionals evaluate a business isn't secret. It's a structured set of calculations applied consistently, every month.
The reason it costs thousands is that someone has to build the structure and run it.
But here's a thought: the structure only needs to be built once. After that, it's just your numbers flowing through it.
More on that soon.
