US teens increasingly use AI chatbots for emotional support
About 12% of US teens turn to AI for emotional support or advice
AI chatbots are becoming deeply integrated into the daily lives of American teenagers, with concerning implications for mental health and social development, according to new research from the Pew Research Center.
The study reveals that while most teens use AI for practical purposes like information searching (57%) and homework assistance (54%), a significant portion are turning to artificial intelligence for functions traditionally filled by human relationships. Notably, 16% of US teens engage with AI for casual conversation, while 12% seek emotional support or advice from chatbots.
This trend has mental health professionals deeply concerned. Popular AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok weren't designed for therapeutic purposes, and experts warn of potentially dangerous psychological consequences. Dr. Nick Haber, a Stanford professor studying the therapeutic applications of large language models, highlights the isolation risks inherent in AI relationships.
"We are social creatures, and there's certainly a challenge that these systems can be isolating," Haber explained. "There are instances where people engage with these tools and become disconnected from the outside world of facts and interpersonal connections, which can lead to isolating—if not worse—effects."
The research also exposes a significant awareness gap between parents and their teenage children. While 64% of teens report using AI chatbots, only 51% of parents believe their children engage with this technology. This disconnect suggests many parents may be unaware of their teens' digital habits and potential risks.
Parent approval varies dramatically based on AI usage type. Most parents support their teens using AI for information searches (79%) and academic help (58%), but approval drops sharply for social and emotional uses. Only 28% of parents approve of casual AI conversations, and just 18% support their children seeking emotional guidance from chatbots. In fact, 58% of parents explicitly disapprove of AI for emotional support purposes.
The stakes of teen AI interaction became tragically apparent through recent controversies. Character.AI, responding to public outcry and lawsuits following two teenage suicides linked to prolonged chatbot conversations, disabled its platform for users under 18. Similarly, OpenAI discontinued its particularly engaging GPT-4o model after users developed concerning emotional dependencies.
These incidents underscore the complex challenges facing AI companies as they balance innovation with user safety. The technology's ability to simulate human-like conversation and emotional responses can create powerful psychological attachments, particularly among vulnerable young users seeking connection and guidance.
Despite widespread adoption, teenagers themselves remain conflicted about AI's broader societal impact. When asked about AI's influence over the next two decades, opinions split relatively evenly: 31% of teens predict positive effects, while 26% anticipate negative consequences. This ambivalence reflects the technology's dual nature—offering convenience and accessibility while raising concerns about authenticity and human connection.
The findings highlight urgent questions about digital literacy, parental oversight, and appropriate AI development for younger users. As chatbots become more sophisticated and accessible, establishing clear guidelines for teen AI interaction becomes increasingly critical.
Mental health experts emphasize the importance of maintaining human connections and professional support systems. While AI may offer immediate availability and judgment-free interaction, it cannot replace the nuanced understanding, empathy, and genuine care that human relationships provide.
Moving forward, parents, educators, and policymakers must work together to ensure teens can benefit from AI technology while protecting their emotional well-being and social development. This includes promoting digital literacy, encouraging open communication about AI use, and developing age-appropriate safeguards for vulnerable users.

Nvidia challenger AI chip startup MatX raised $500M
MatX secures $500M funding to challenge Nvidia with advanced AI processors.
MatX, an ambitious AI chip startup founded by two former Google hardware engineers, has successfully raised $500 million in Series B funding led by Jane Street and Situational Awareness, an investment fund formed by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner. The company aims to develop processors that are 10 times more effective than Nvidia's GPUs at training large language models and delivering results.
The funding round attracted notable investors including Marvell Technology, NFDG, Spark Capital, and Stripe co-founders Patrick and John Collison. MatX's founder and CEO Reiner Pope announced the milestone Tuesday through a LinkedIn post, though the company has not disclosed its latest valuation.
This significant investment comes more than a year after MatX's Series A round of approximately $100 million, which was led by Spark Capital and valued the startup at over $300 million in 2024. The company's closest competitor, Etched, recently raised a similar $500 million round at a $5 billion valuation, highlighting the intense competition in the AI chip sector.
Both founders bring impressive credentials from their time at Google. Before co-founding MatX in 2023, Pope led AI software development for Google's TPUs, the tech giant's proprietary AI chips. His co-founder Mike Gunter was a lead designer of the TPU hardware, giving the startup deep expertise in both software and hardware aspects of AI chip development.
The new funding will enable MatX to manufacture its chips through TSMC, with the company planning to begin shipping its processors in 2027. This timeline positions MatX to enter the market during a critical period when demand for specialized AI hardware continues to surge across industries seeking more efficient alternatives to current GPU-based solutions.
